Startup help #2

I’m cranking the engine with the EGI fuse removed to check for oil pressure. The gauge stays at zero. Any thoughts what to check?

It’s a new engine.

The stock oil pressure gauge is not reliable and does not work. You should not be using it for anything

I believe the EGI fuse also disables the ECU, since my Power FC Master won’t even power on when I pull that fuse. I could be wrong, but the evidence points to my theory.

It does but it doesn't have anything to do with oil pressure or the gauge in the cluster. The tach is the only gauge in cluster that needs the ecu.

That’s very helpful. The ECU has no power like you said. I was chasing that gremlin as well. I’ll find a different way to keep it from starting.

The fuel level gauge is not working either. I just added 5 gallons of fresh gas and it’s at zero. This is on the same circuit. I’m thinking I missed a connector.

I’m following this startup procedure:

https://rotaryresurrection.com/rx7-s...r-own-engines/

I expected to see the gauge move off zero when I cranked it to verify I have some oil pressure. I understand it’s not a reliable gauge.

The 15A fuse common to the three gauges was checked and is ok.

Thanks for the help.

Update: you were right. The ECU has power again with the EGI fuse back in place. Thanks!

To be clear, with the key to the “ON” position, shouldn’t I be seeing a fuel level?

Yes. Tha gauge maintains its position regardless of power settings. It will simply "update" when power is applied

I replaced the sensor with a 43 ohm resistor to GND. The gauge/wiring is working after all. I measured the sensor resistance output, and it’s in the Mega Ohm range. Probably a failed sensor.

Started, no leaks, runs well. Just need to set idle and work on turbo control.

Drove around and stayed off boost. It’s incredible.

Gotta take at least one drive with the hood off.

Glad you solved the issue, how were you able to keep it from not starting without pulling the EGI fuse? I know how to do it on my car since I just pull the fuse for my fuel pump with standalone wiring directly to the battery.

The EGI fuse stayed out until I was ready for it to start. I put it in temporarily to verify the ECU was working, then removed it again.

I also put it in to pressurize the fuel system to check for leaks. That’s when I discovered the fuel pump was toast. I put the original fuel pump back in for startup and will get a higher flow pump on order.

Had a small oil leak on the turbo oil supply line (engine side), tightened it down and restarted. Ran well after that 👍
