SS DP's: HKS vs. M2 vs. Rotary Extreme vs. ???

Any bad "bolt-on" experience with the referenced SS Downpipes? How about the craftmanship, i.e.., welds and polish on the DP? Your input will help me decide on which one to purchace for my 93. Cost factor; HKS-(299.00).....M2-(290.00).....R. EXtreme-(340.00). Thanks in advance for your participation.

I have the M2.....absolutely perfect, no trouble at all just remember not to break those studs....the pipe lined up perfectly, no probs at all....DP makes those turbos come alive, and enjoy the sound....

I can tell you that the Rotary Extreme is the same as the M2 and made from the same place that makes my M2.
To make a long story short, M2 screwed their old manufacturer of their downpipes and left them with a bunch of them.

HKS sells for $199
M2 $289

After reading a few threads on DP's, it seems that the M2 has fewer, if any, negatives when compared with some of the other name brand DP's. ...But looking at the R.Extreme DP, it seems that they really manufacture a quality item. Wonder if the M2 is welded and polished just like the R. Ext. DP?. I really don't like the crimp the HKS has on their DP. I think that crimp brings that area down to 2.5".

The HKS may be cheaper, however, it's made out of mild steel and it also flows less than the M2/RE/Bonez, blah, blah, blah.

The HKS is made for RHD cars so it has to be narrower at the mounting flange to clear the steering column, etc, etc.....

Bottom line, you get what you pay for - go for the S/S pipe (regardless of manufacturer). S/S won't rust like the Mild steel.

yea they do...the m2 pipes that you heard about not being polished were knockoffs selling it claiming it to be m2's.

due you have any data to back up your flow claims or is it based on a visual difference in the two? i noticed the bend as well so i'm curiouse? please post it so we can see or tell where you saw the data. thanks!

Smile no data....

I have no dyno/flow data to back me up.....I'm only repeating what I've heard from various owners/tuners since they started selling these HKS DP's here stateside a couple-few years back. I wish someone did have some back-to-back numbers!

Plus common sense would led one to believe that the narrower diameter pipe (up where it meets the turbos) would inhibit flow, more so than the US-made 3" DP's.
Any restriction (no matter the size) on the exhaust side of the turbos would adversely affect flow.

I've seen the HKS and an ATR S/S DP compared side by side and the difference in the size of the piping at the top mounting point is very evident.....I think I"ve still got some pic's, I'll see if I can locate them!

go get the exact same car with an hks downpipe and then one with an M2 or blah blah blah, and see if it makes any different power on the dyno. I've seen similar cars modified with differnt downpipes making very similar power.

Have you ever tried installing a downpipe before? None of the ones you have mentioned, M2, bonez, etc...fit perfectly. The M2 one is 10 degrees off and needs modification to fit. The HKS one is the only one that fits perfectly without any modification

M2 screwed their first manufacter of the downpipe. They went with someone else and decided to start polishing them to set it apart from the others.
The one I and Rotaryextreme carry is made by the old maker and is identical to the one they carry now except for the polishing. The important part is the bend in the pipe, not the way it looks.

I installed my M2 downpipe and it fits perfectly without modification. It was made around the time that M2 would have been with its first manufacturer, so I expect that Jason's and rotaryextreme's pipes fit just as well.

Cool

I've either installed or helped to install several different DP's over the past 6 years....the easiest one I ever installed was an RX7 Fashion one - when Chuck (who now has Rotary Extreme) used to own/run it.

If you want an HKS for ease of installment....go for it! I'll stay with the recommendation of a full 3" inch S/S DP. Just personal preference and the belief that the less restriction the mo better! No biggie.

You know what they say about opinions fellas...
