spark plug heat index

hey i was just wondering if anybody knew the difference in the spark plug heat indexes 9, 10, and 11 when buying spark plugs?

the hotter teh engine runs the colder teh plug shoudl be, u will find that a lot of peopel on this forum use 9s all around. if you go road racign u might wanna try 10s on the trailing and 9s on the leading.
