Source for shorter 5th gear set?

My tranny's making all kinds of racket so I'm in the beginning stages of rebuilding my old one. While it's all apart I'm thinking that a shorter 5th wouldn't be a bad idea. After speaking with Ray, the jedi master Mazda parts guy, he's telling me he gets them from Japan.. blah blah blah.. takes a while.. blah blah... $250 or so.. blah.

I'm trying to get this sucker apart and back together for the Labor Day Mazda Drivers event at Summit so I'm not trying to wait for the slow boat from Japan. I was also thinking there's got to be another source for more reasonable $$ too. Anyone have a source for these? I have to believe they're a common item in someone's circle.

Thanks much,

Dave

You can usually pick up a used JDM tranny pretty cheap:

Yeah.. I thought about that too. It would be one fell swoop. I wasn't happy with the last used, supposedly PFS rebuilt tranny.. and that probably set the tone for wanting to rebuild instead of re-purchase. Besides, I have the facilities/help to do it. Once you factor shipping, the money's basically the same and I'll have a totally rebuilt unit. Thanks, though.

shipping is 75 bucks on a pallet to my door in NJ so.. I'd take my chances with 3 JDM trannies which would be about 1700 bucks rather than spending 2k+ on a rebuild. Whats the chance that I would get three bad trannies? I guess its the same chance that I would get a bad rebuild

Parts to rebuild tranny are $510 shipped... included new bearings, synchros, seals, selector rod.. The feeling that it's done right and everythig's new is my bonus.
