sound systems in RX-7s

how does the stock R1/R2 sound system sound?? the one without the Bose tubes.

is the bass tube the only difference in the sound system between the R1/R2 and touring, or are the speakers and head unit different too??

thanks.

The Bose speakers have amplifier modules built into them. The non-Bose speakers are powered from the head units built in amp. The center speakers however use an external amplifier in both cases (Bose and non-Bose) just not the same one. Therefore all speakers center channel amp and head unit are different between Bose and non-Bose.

Neither system sounds very good with the stock head unit. An upgraded head unit is mandatory to make either system sound decent. Upgrading the speakers helps even more. Since it is relatively easy to upgrade the 4 speakers in the non-Bose it is considered a really good idea.

For now I am able to live with my stock Bose speakers (with upgraded head unit). I am going to add rear speakers in the stock R1 location to help bring up the volume level.

Most single din head units will fit just fine without any real modifications.

If you install it in the bottom slot you will not have to worry about adding a rear suport bracket. The stock bracket has a shelf to support the back of the radio in the lower slot.

You can add the stock storage pocket, or a guage pod to the upper slot.

Of course wiring has to be modified a little but wiring harness adapters are available.
Metra AW-WHMZ2 or American International MWH-856 CL.

Upgrading a Bose will require an additional adapter.

All the RX's stock stereos suck IMHO, but the Base and R1/R2 model systems are at least 2 times worse than the Touring/Bose setup. Doesn't take all that much to make it better. First order of business will be to replace the stock speakers. They are made of paper and have absolutely no range or volume. Make sure you spend a little extra $$$ on the fronts as these are what you will be "listening" to, the rear are just fillers. Secondly, replace the head unit with somthing better. You can get a decent (17-19 watt RMS) unit for under $200 these days. This will be more than adequate to drive the speakers. Finally think about adding an amplified woofer to the trunk. I did these modifications to my last RX (I think I spent a little less than $400) and it sounded 50 times better than stock.

Just as a reference point, my wifes explorer sounds better than my Base RX-7 without the mods.
