sorry for the stupid question but...

what is the y-pipe? i hear quite a few people refering to it and that its made of plastic on the US fd's but on the efini's it was metal. where is it located and does anybody have a picture of what it looks like. the reason im asking is because yesterday i pulled apart all the intercooler and intake piping to try and find a boost leak. i fixed the leak but one thing i remembered is that its very common for the ypipe to crack. i saw something that looked like a y shape but it was metal the thing im talking about is the piece that the top intercooler pipe runs to. i was wondering if that is the y pipe or is the ypipe somewhere else?

Yes, and there is a rubber coupling connecting the stock y-pipe to the plastic crossover, where the efini is an aluminum y-pipe bolted to an aluminum crossover.
