So that's why my idle has been "funny" (aka, when plugs go bad)

Went to do a compression test at IRP yesterday.

Pulled my plugs and this is what we found:

apparently these plugs came off the Titanic...

^ oh yeah and the one on the right has broken ceramic because it EXPLODED, cutting my hand, as i was removing it...

♫♫♫ one of these things is not like the others! ♫♫♫

new 9's! woowoo!

stupid me, i was still running 7's & 9's. running 9's all the way around now. also replaced the plug wires while i was at it.

anyway, compression test was a success. the motor had cooled down by the time we actually did the test, but the numbers were still good - 14k miles on the rebuild. the front was slightly lower but close to these rear numbers:

i'm pretty sure i put those plugs in right before i drove from FL to NY...in may 2009. since then, i've drove it back to FL, back to NY again, and lots of weekend day trips...

oops. should have checked sooner. haha

I use Denso Iridium Racing plugs and will never go back to standard pos NGKs - pulled the Densos recently with 10k miles and they showed very little wear. They're worth every dime, and probably produce a couple extra hp to boot.

Timely thread. My idle is fine, but probably due for plugs too. I don't need to brag on how much I paid, just need a good plug. NGKs will be going back in.

Did you check your wires? With all the oxidation on the end of the plug i'll bet there's some nasty stuff inside your wires as well.

Looks like I'm a little late to this thread

So Tom, you took the plugs out huh? I suppose you did your compression test too right ?

Glad the VRR PSHH-mobile can now out-accelerate the local mopeds......

We should do it again sometime, and with some frosty six packs

P.S. Yonathan, you're just jealous that you weren't invited

ok ok i admit, i needed rich's super human strength to remove the front lower plug and the one that shattered. my puny toothpick arms just didn't have the umph to break 2 of the plugs loose.

in other news, my new rims finally came in. i can't tell you how hard it was to get these in the proper offset...

think i'm gonna paint them gold or gunmetal.

Worst plugs I ever saw were a buddy's FC back in the day. The electrode had actually worn all the way down inside the ceramic. Needless to say car ran like ***. Set of new plugs was like a brand new world, he was HOLY CRAP on the power after that.

BTW, Ronal Bears for the win.

My experience has been that these suckers only last 5000-7000 miles if you're 320-350whp.

What does it mean when your electrode is worn down like that? Both my trailing plugs are like that...not as bad but still worn down....

It usually means you should have replaced the plugs some time ago

Im talking about what causes this? Cuz I just rebuilt my motor and its modded pretty good and Im worried about what would cause this. Im 13k+ into this car and havnt gotten it tuned yet but should be okay with a base tune for daily driving and ****....just worried and wanna know what causes the plugs to do this.

I guess while you're at it I'll do some show and tell too. I brought my car to Steve Kan for tuning with these babies in it. Prev owner said the plugs were "pretty new." Ya. right. lol. But still my fault for not checking. Should have tuned on brand new plugs anyway.

And yes the metal electrode thing was already broken off and slid right out of the ceramic.

sheesh, why do people wait to change plugs in rotaries.. they should be changed when they are at most 15k miles old.

No idea. Some people's idea of "pretty new" is not quite the same.
