You probably already thought of this, but if not, I suggest washing down that whole area of the bay with water and baking soda. You want to get rid of acid residue by neutralizing and rinsing whatever may be left. Then clean up, repair and repaint any rust damage.

At the risk of upsetting him further...should he be concerned about the coupling in that oil cooler line? As I recall, there is a small steel clip that holds the fitting together. If that clip has been weakened significantly, the coupling could come loose and that wouldn't be a good thing.

dAMN, MAN, When I saw your pic, I thought you had taken a picture of my car. I have the EXACT same situation, right down to the same corrosive pattern... My car is in the garage for the winter now...let me know how you fix this.
