So I think I'm ready to get an FD......

Well I have been surfing the forums for a lil while here because I am strongly considering buying an RX7. I have looked at all the different article's on here explaining the how to's and different buyer's guides as well, so I know what to look for. My question is, I have been seeing much more frequently cars that have new or reman motors put in them already. Would I rather buy something like this which has low miles on the motor, or do I wanna hold out for a low mileage original motor?? What are the pros and cons to buying one that has another motor installed in it? If there's not really a "con" to it, then aren't I better off buying one w/a blown motor or no motor (hopefully get it for a deal then), and then just build the **** outta another motor??

I respect all you guys here and the wealth of knowledge you all have and I trust your opinions and responses, so that is why I am here asking. Any information about this is GREATLY appreciated.

Well the youngest FD's not imported into the state is 11 years old. Unless you're will to spend big bucks on a LOW mileage FD, you're better off getting an FD with higher miles on the chassis and a rebuilt motor( or orig motor if it's running well). Depending on how a driver takes care of the motor and the mods, it can blow early, or last 100k+ miles. The original motor on my car lasted 117k miles. I bought it with a streetported rebuild, more power, and it cost me less. Of course there's elements on the body and suspension I need to attend to, but still, I think I got a bargain. So think about how much you want to spend, how/if you want to mod the car, and seriously consider having an extra daily driver besides the FD. Check out the FAQ sticky at the top of the forum. There's alot of good info there.

I wouldn't bother finding an original low milage engine because the 12-10 year old coolant seals are going to be blowing out soon. I would look for a low milage chassis with a newley installed reman. Or similar. The closer to stock the better.

In the long run you will end up saving money if you buy a car that has been slightly/fully modded out. The person putting the parts on eats the cost of these parts pretty much. Just make sure everything was done right, and not abused.

Youre dead on with this. If you want to mod, you can save a lot by getting a car with some goodies already on it.

More important however, will be if the rest of the car is nice. Its hard to find a nice 12 year old car that the paint and interior still look great. Thats why you see $9k FDs and 20k FDs, it is worth it to pay more for a nicer car.

They eat the cost then you inherit all their mistakes. I personally would rather start from scratch. If your into saving cash the fd isn't the best choice IMO.

I've bought a few cars that have been modded, and from my experiences I'd rather buy something as close to stock as POSSIBLE. I have 2 other cars now and I'm keeping one of those for sure, so I do have a daily, which is another thing I learned from owning modded cars lol. I mean, I'm ok with mild mods not lookin for anything extreme though this way there is a less LIKELY chance of it being abused.

Thanks for all the info so far guys, please keep it coming.

Also, any guys here around Cleveland Ohio, I'd love to possibly meet up and see what these cars are all about inperson, considering I haven't even driven in one yet.

My feelings exactaly. I get sick of telling people to search and read the FAQ's though.

After a mod writes something like this why do people ALWAYS have to chime in with "my thought to, or thats what I thought," or whatever. Sorry for trying to get real world opinions from CURRENT members with the CURRENT market value of these cars. I'll be sure to never do something so stupid. No one else up till this point in the prior posts said this. I also added in if there were locals to me as well???

I'm like 10 minutes from downtown in the western suburbs. Actually I was in Columbus down at OSU partying like a few weeks ago to. But yeah I'd love to talk to as many current owners, hopefully in person, and actually get a ride in one of these. I need something to keep up with my buddies in their toys damn it lol

I'm not here to start any trouble, I'm here to learn and make friends with people who have the same interest. I talked to Rx-7Addict tonight and I want to say thanks to him for being cool about it and definately helped me by giving me advice and answering my questions. We have all been newbs at one point or another and been picked on or whatever you wanna call it, and we all know how it feels. Don't know if its as prominant here, but the other forum I'm on for example (not gonna mention sites) totally I mean TOTALLY tears someone up for bringing up those "scams." I make it a point not to come down on newbs because "if I don't have anything constructive to say" I won't say anything.

Cgotto6, like I said no hard feelings I just have a natural reaction to stand up whenever I feel like I am threatened or called on or whatever you wanna call it. And as always, I always make a concious effort to search b4 I post.

I hope we can all respect each other.

Thanks.
