So close to passing Inspection - Need Advice!!

Here are my results:

GAS STANDARD READING RESULT
NOx 1045 1082 FAIL
HC 136 17 PASS
CO% 0.76 0.00 PASS

Here are my mods:

Poor man's non-seq
PFC - base map
Downpipe and Cat-Back

performance wise, everything else is stock.

i tried putting my stock ECU back, but when i plug it in the check engine light comes on. after some diagnosis, i get a code of 12 - Throttle Sensor. prior to putting in my PFC, i never got this check engine code. i tried resetting it multiple times but it always comes back up. i tried unplugging the harness on the sensor and plugging it back in, but it still comes up.

so instead of diagnosing this problem, i need to know of another way to pass the emissions test with the PFC.

is there anything i can change in the base map to allow me to lower the NOx just enough to pass the test?

any help is greatly appreciated.

Add alcohol, I heard it helps , just dont boost or anything on it.

OK here's what we're looking at:

high NOx
low CO
low HC
TPS fail code

I think that what's happening is that you've got a problem with the TPS causing you to run very lean... this results in LOW CO and HC and can raise NOx (which are already fairly high on a rotary anyhow).

My advice is to fix the TPS problem and see if it fixes your emissions. You know a bad TPS might be doing other damage (from being too lean) to your engine!

If you don't want to do that, my next guess would be to pull about 7-10 degrees of timing (retard the timing) in the area on the map where the test is run and see if that works. I really would try to fix your TPS first instead!!!!!

I dont know about failing NOx, that is strange. Usually when people have emissions problems it is HC and/or CO. You can try alcohol, it may be enough to get that NOx number down, but I would be worried that something else might be wrong with the car. If I remember right NOx goes up with combustion temperatures. Possibly you are running lean, or have an intake leak somewhere past the throttle body. One thing you can do is create a boost leak at one of the intake couplers around the intercooler big enough to keep the engine from boosting. if you are lean under boost causing high NOx that could help solve the problem.

Oh yeah, and you can also add more fuel by increasing the injector duty, I think the PFC setting is called PIM Voltage. Any way, raise it to 110% for both front and rear.

thanks for all the input. according to the technical manual, troubleshooting the TPS problem either results in replacing the ECU or replacing the sensor. what i don't understand is why i never had this problem before the PFC. i'll need to go through the troubleshooting procedure first though.

vosko advised me to try the "guaranteed to pass stuff" from strauss auto...you guys think that'd work?

any suggestions as to where to begin diagnosing the TPS problem?

The guaranteed to pass stuff is mostly just alcohol and/or injector cleaner and/or octane boosters. Usually it's alcohol. If you want to try that, save yourself the money and just buy a gallon of denatured alcohol from a paint store (around 10 bucks). Mix 1 gallon in with about 1/3 tank of gas and go test. Don't do any boosting on this mix, and immediately fill up with high octane after your test is done. Drive nicely on that tank too... then refill with gas again, and resume normal boosting.

I don't really think the alcohol will help, but it might... My advice remains the same as before... figure out that TPS problem! It's a pretty important sensor...

thanks wargasm...i'll definitely get to figuring out the TPS problem first. i thought that the check engine light didn't make a difference because the PFC never detected a problem there...but this was before i found out the check engine light doesn't work with the PFC.
