Smokes Heavily When I Start The Car ONLY After It Has Fully Cooled Down Over Night???
I have a 94 (California emmissions) RX7. Everytime the car sits until cool (usually only when it sits over night) I will start it up and It will pour out smoke enough that you can't even see the car... Once you drive the car around the block and kick the turbo's in it will go away. So now I am forced to get in the car and the second I start it I have to race around the block (which is terrible for a car just warming up) Now I have my check engine light on and I did the diagnostic test and got code #16 which is the EGR valve (only on the California RX7's) My coolant light is also coming on and off and i see that around the coolant sensor there is a leak The only modification done to this car is the AST removal. (i don't think this leak or the AST removal has anything to do with the smoking problem) I'm guessing that the problem is just the EGR valve but I'm not sure... Is there anything else this could be and has anyone ever had this problem happen to them?

I agree
I went through the same thing with my 2nd gen.. I've heard that a few people have had moderate success with stop-leak in the radiator (like Bar's stop leak).. but it's gonna get worse. I had about a month between when it would smoke after sitting and rediculous smoke every time.. Ended up selling it to carmax after I got it good and hot.
smoke
i am wondering what type of oil you are useing if is synthetic this is why or what i think mine started doing this when i started useing it but im stoping that right now and am going to 20 50w let me no jason.

Yeah, smoke color is a big consideration.
WORST case scenario, you blew an O-ring. Although it Is possible you are having an excessive amount of oil injected into the combustion chambers during startup.
I can't possibly think how the EGR is tied into the OMP, but I suppose anything is possible with an FD..
How many miles are on your FD?

My car has 75,000 miles. I believe it is white smoke and from what I remember it doesn't smell too bad. Since i got the car i haven't put synthetic oil in... What I don't understand is that the car starts and runs fine. Wouldn't too much oil injected, on start up, happen all the time not just when the motor is cold? What exactly is the O-ring, where is it located and how do you test to see if it is bad? My friend was saying something about the side seals(is this the O-rings?) This Saturday I am going to check the EGR valve and run a compression test to test the apex and side seals and the following Tuesday I have an appointment at my local Mazda dealership. Do any of you have any suggestions on other tests I should do or what I should say to the people at Mazda? I have an extended warranty (thank GOD!) which will cover most but I cannot get them to cover the EGR valve because it is part of emmisions just like a muffler. Maybe I can get a new engine out of them instead!!!! lol

At start up, the OMP injects extra oil into the combustion chamber. It could be injecting a bit TOO much. Enough to notice in the morning but not enough to notice while driving.
The seals are shaped like a big O. hence the name O-ring :p They are crushed between the plates and the housings.

The smoke is because of the oil seal(s) have worn out the only way to fit is to strip the motor down! the coolant sensor leak fit it! by taking it out and putting some pumbing tape or rtv gasket goo around it and that should fit the light problem!
Oil seals in the motor? Side seals? Or is it oil seals in the turbo? I am going to have Mazda replace the coolant sensor and the reason why I haven't fixed the sensor leak is because I want the warranty company to cover it and I don't think they will if I mess with the car. Where should I tell the technician to look first? The 3rd gens are Rarely ever at the Mazda dealership and I'm kind of scared to bring it to them. I feel as if I know more about a 3rd gen then any of them do!!!
I have the same thing happening on my '93 federal emissions FD. But on mine it's white smoke, with a STRONG gas/oil smell to it... no prestone smell at all, and my compression is good. Also, it seems to go away after the accellerated warm-up is over, even before the (oh so wonderful) temp gauge has moved. *shrug* This help any of you techies out there?
