Smoke from behind throttle body
Hi All,
I took my RX7 for a nice run at the weekend up the motorway, running between 70-110 MPH most of the time. I covered around 150-200 miles.
When I came to stop at the petrol station i noticed a rather large amount of smoke coming from passenger the rear wheel arch [the car is RHD [i'm in the UK]]
I though the caliper had seized on the rear wheel but the brakes weren't even hot. I opened the bonnet and the smoke then began to come from behind the throttle body, i couldn't see anything as it was fairly dark. So i drove the remaining part of the jpurney off boost and at 55mph. Upon coming to a stop at idle the car would begin smoking from the rear arch [slightly]. Once you accelerate/put the engine under load the problem seems to dissappear.
I had the car checked at a garage and they fixed 3 leaks - an oil pan leak, a power steering leak and another oil leak. They also changed the oil and fluids.
On the return journey car seemed better but upon coming to rest the smoke was still there, slightly less but still there. I made it back home - no warnings & no unusual readings on the gauges.
It seems that at idle it does it, but when you shut off the ignition it gets worse and it seems to do it until the car cools down.
It has a oily smell to the smoke.
The oil pressure gauge reads 2 KG/CM3 at idle / 4 KG CM3 at 3000 RPM and 4.5/5 at 5K. When cold the gauge reads just less than 8 KG CM3 until the car warms up.
Coolant level good, coolant gauge normal.
Car pulls well, no boost probs etc.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be. On a short slow speed journey it doesn't seem to do it - even if it's 45 mins. Only after a motorway high speed blast does it seem to kick in.

You also may still have an oil leak the garage did not catch or did not cure. Your smoke is in all likelihood coming from oil being sprayed/dripped onto the exhaust or the cat. I would guess oil pan or tranny leak. Oil pan leaks are almost never fixed short of completely redoing the oil pan gasket/seal.

2 things. One potentially serious...
1. There is a coolant hose that goes to the throttle body. That could be leaking
2. Fuel Pulsation Dampener. You sure your smelling oil and not some gas? Do a search on fuel pulsation dampener or FPD for more info on that.
Just to confirm, the smoke is coming from the right side of the car when you are looking at it from the front? The side of the motor with the plugs and throttle body?

Check your turbo oil feed and return lines. Its probably leaking on to the turbos or exhaust thus the burning scent. You are gonna need to jack up the front of the car to inspect closely. You don't see it while driving of course because the car is moving. You can see the smoke at idle because the car is not moving. And it'll continue to burn and smoke untill the turbos and exhaust have cooled down. Pretty common problem but a pain in the *** to replace the gaskets for the lines. Mainly the return lines from the twins. So thats why you should just go with a single setup..!! J/K Just make sure to check your oil level every couple days if problem persist.
