FWIW I've been using the XS Power I/C at the track for 2 seasons without any issue. I made my own piping for it, reenforced the AST bracket, and built a duct for it. I'm sorry my car is the *scourge* of "ghetto *** modding..." that has "...hurt these cars worse than anything else in their 14 years of existance" despite the fact that it runs perfectly and has been completely reliable even though I did everything on the cheap. But there you have it.

^ is the pipe on the left of the intercooler available for purchase anywhere, or did you just make it? i guess that would replace the efini hard pipe? im about to buy an fd and was going to get an efini y pipe. would the y pipe still be usefull using the xs power intercooler and custom pipes?

I use the stock '93 y-pipe. From there, a 90 degree tight-radius silicone coupler. The black pipe you see is from the junkyard. It's an intercooler pipe from an older turbo Volvo. They can be had for $5 or less from any pick-n-pull lot. I just cut off one of the ends of the pipe to fit my application. It has a *slightly* smaller ID than the inlet of the I/C, but not enough to make much of a difference when running the stock twins.

Utter and complete pieces of garbage. An intercooler is one thing, a turbo that spins at 100,000+ rpm is another. Expect it to last 10-15 minutes of run time.

Search under my username and 'xs power' to find more info.

i've got an xspower turbo at the moment. I'm almost 90% confident that it blew my motor though the previos owner was not nice to my car and it could've been any number of things... like running a single turbo on stock injectors, no cat, 3' downpipe, no boost controller, and on stock ecu.....

I still suspect the turbo despite all that. I just don't trust it. Here's the one that is on mine atm..
http://xs-power.com/mazda/mazda004.html

I would strongly recommend getting ANY turbo over it. The A-Spec GT3574 will be its replacement once i get the $$. Course it's only got 400 miles on the rebuild and there's no way it's getting boosted anytime soon.

i use the xspower intercooler and it has been giving me okay temperatures. i get around 86c driving around going up to 90c when its really hot. its an okay intercooler and will do the job but there is better. im probably just going to stick with this setup until i can get a v-mount of some sort.

I really appreciate all your guys' response and input. I don't even think this site was up when I had my first FD in 99.... You guys are awesome!!

I didn't think it would cause such a stir but it's good to hear from both ends of the spectrum...

Now just a short follow up question, I just wanted to know if there is an aftermarket SMIC that would fit with the stock airbox???

I'm going more for reliability than up the HP.

Thanks so much!!!

What duct are you running? Also part of the problem with your temps are that they are based off the stock ait sensor which does not react very quickly. That's why i have been using GM open element AIT sensors for datalogging the inlet and outlet temperatures of the IC. I also have ground down the plastic around my stock sensor to help it react quicker along with relocating it to my Greddy Elbow. I will try and post some of my data logs. Its pretty pathetic how slowly and how little the stock AIT changes temperature.

Also what you really should be interested in is the temperatures at the end of a wide open run. Cruise varies on a lot things. Though I don't believe I have ever seen my temperatures running consistantly that high.

not sure on the airbox thing..I think the Peter Farrell IC fits with the stock airbox, though.

You'll learn that everyone on this site has their own opinion on any topic and everyone elses opinion sucks *** and they are *******(for some reason..I never understood it, but I like to be combative too, so flame on!)

Hey that's one reason I wanted to test the IC out to give results as that is what everyone complained about before is not having results for the IC to show it was good or bad.

That's pretty much true with anything in life, or atleast the way people think. The more you spend the better the item should be, even if it isn't we try and justify our purchase with a name brand or something because no one likes to admit they wasted their money.

Ever notice whenever a friend of family member gets a new car, they love it, and then the day they trade it in/sell it they say "Thank God, I'll never buy another one of those."

WOW, that is probably the most poorly modded FD I have ever heard of. And with a crap turbo! Sounds like you are on the right path now though! Good luck

IIRC the only SMIC's that fit with the stock airbox are Greddy and ARC small. I have a PFS SMIC and I seriously doubt it would fit.

As for my opinion on this intercooler... it HAS to be better than stock, and it is super cheap. I would definitely check for any metal shavings and leaks before installation. And you NEED a good duct and piping for the IC to work properly.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. I have a cheap ($250.00) GodSpeed Intercooler and it works GREAT with whatever ducting I have. Whenever I pop the hood after driving the intake side is always MUCH cooler than the turbo side.

My UIM was actually cool to the touch driving it home from Ohio in the early spring-time.

I'm not sure what intake box this is or where he got it, but this is a picture of an FD I was looking at a few years ago with a PFS SMIC...to this day, I wish I'd bought it
