Question Small dilema on what mod to do next.

Ok here it goes, I have had my rx7 for about 4 months now. I got my boost gauge and my water temp gauge. I then got my turbo timer. Last week I put in a new ACT clutch, street/strip disk with heavy duty pressure plate. At that time I got my M2 downpipe installed also. I just ordered a JIC cat-back exhaut (havent recieved it yet).

Heres the problem I think my car might be spikeing to about 12psi. At WOT it will hit 12 then fall to 10 or 11 psi. It used to spike a little, but I was told dont worry. With that in mind I dont think I should put the cat-back on. So I want to get a stand alone, but its too expensive right now. So I thought maybe a boost controller for the time being would be a good idea. What do you think I should do? Adjust my pills? Is their a better way or another order I should do it in? Or is this common and just put the sucker on?

Most will suggest to you a boost controller. I ran up to 14 psi on my strock ecu for 6 months with out any problems. I was lucky I guess. I would suggest that you either A:brave it like I did and hope for the best
or B: Get a manual boost controler installed
in the line. Per Rob Robbinette
Really I think you would be fine on 12 psi. But be warned most would recommend against it.

You could mess with the Home Depot valves for boost control (which I personally didn't like), or put in Holley carb jets to limit boost. I settled on the second option and liked it better.

I would get some sort of fuel computer. It's cheaper than a rebuild.

First off, be sure to always run Sunoco 94 gas.
(should be available out there).

Pick up a reprogrammed ECU for cheap.
Then you can install your exhaust without worrying.
After that, a simple pill swap can keep your boost below 12psi if need be.

you probably want to think about replaceing or piggybacking your ecu sometime soon. like others have suggested, a boost controller would be appropriate if you are still running stock ecu & ic. you almost might think about an ic for that matter...

let the sickness continue!!!

I second this opinion!

The Home Depot valves are not always the right tool for the job and can tempt you to crank up the boost when you shouldn't be. Tweaking the PC line is very touchy too. The valves don't really have good resolution for the PC line.

I used a Holley Carb jet and drilled it out to .073", remove the stock WG pill and install drilled out jet. This eliminated spiking, boost is at 10-11psi, stock ECU with DP, CB and Efini y-pipe.

There are some fairly inexpensive piggy-back types of fuel computers on the market to increase the duty on your injectors at higher boost levels. You don't need to start with a Power FC, though it would be nice.

Keep the FD cool and rich and you shouldn't have too many problems (at least not catastrophic ones).
