Sick 93 FD in SD - shakes and smokes at idle, pulls strong otherwise
Howdy folks
(note: I originally posted a somewhat longer version of this in the west coast forum, because I was looking for local San Diego info and possibly for buyers, but after reading it a 2nd time I thought it might be more useful to post here)
My daily driver 93 Montego FD is sick with some kind of problem that, in my not very informed opinion, sort of resembles a blown apex seal. I'm in the process of diagnosing it today and tomorrow. I say "sort of" resembled because I've had a blown apex seal before, and it had some different symptoms.
The car:
93 FD Touring - 87k miles, rebuild with about 20k on the motor. ~7k of those 20k miles are highway miles from several trips back and forth between Portland and LA/San Diego.
Stock except:
complete silicone air and vacuum line replacement
stealth DP mod (precat turned into pass-through pipe)
upgraded front anti sway bar
K&N filter mounted in the stock air box
Battery relocated into Driver's side storage bin (make room for upsized IC that never happened)
Symptoms:
Starts with no trouble. 1-3 cranks and it lights right up, either cold or warm.
Big blue smoke cloud on cold start, blue smoke for maybe 15 seconds, tapering off to nothing after 30-45 seconds. Warm starts have no smoke. Smells a little rich.
Under 1100rpm, motor shakes like Kramer with tourettes after a case of red bull. Below 800rpm it nearly dies, sometimes slowing down to 200-300 rpm, then corrects back to 800-1000 where it's a lot smoother, but not "smooth." It might actually stall if I let it do this up and down oscillation long enough, though I haven't tried.
Above 1100rpm, pulls fairly strong and things smooth out almost completely, turbos kick in, etc, all the way to 7000. I haven't done more than touch that number a couple times to see how the RPM pull went o I don;t know if that's sutainable. I haven't taken it on the road like this more than once, all other tests are done while parked.
No ECU Codes except for one 15 that didn't come back after I cleared the ECU (which didn't change the behavior at all).
Waiting to get a compression test done tomorrow, I'll update when I have the numbers.
Any ideas on the source of the bad mojo would be most welcome
So, at any rate, I was pondering selling it before this started happening but now I am sure I am done with it.
It has around 87k and a rebuild about 20k ago, and that was a long-term warrantied rebuild from a reputable shop, with the highest rebuild tolerances etc. I'll not say who did the rebuild because I am not sure what the problem is yet, and don't want to associate any names with negative results if I cannot confirm there is a connection.
When I know about the compression test results I'll update but for now I am strongly considering selling it whether it needs rebuild or not.
If anyone is interested, I am looking to sell this car no matter how the diagnosis turns out, and I'm motivated to do it quickly. PM me and I can send pics or arrange a time to show you the car if you are local to the SD Area.

Hmmm.... not sure what that could be. If the compression is fine on the motor then I guess it must be some kind of engine management problem... perhaps a bad sensor or wiring somewhere or an ignition problem.
If you decide to sell send me a PM.

I had this happen in a customers car recently, except it smoke at idle all the time? I figured it was a chipped seal due to vacuum readings. Once I tore it down, all the seals looked find, it wasnt until I tried removing the seals that I found the problem. A good sized dent from detonation in the face of one of the rotors had pinched one of the seals.
That is the first time I had seen that happen without breaking a seal, it was 3mm atkins seal by the way for whatever that is worth. He probably drove the car about 500 miles this way.
