Arrow Should I buy this FD?? Pics inside!!!

Hello everyone. I and my friend have both been looking for an FD for a while, and finally found this one. The person is selling it for $3,000 ,its missing an engine and everything else u can see in the pics. I think its all minor stuff, but I wanted to get your guys opinion. What do you guys think? Should one of us go for it? My friend already has a whole front clip of a RHD FD with all the suspension and engine so that shouldn’t be a problem. Please post honest opinion.

Thanks.
-Alfredo-

I wouldn't. Too much $$ to get it to the way that I would like, and not be embarassed driving around.

i wouldnt either. too much money for what it is. You would spend as much restoring that car as you would buying a nice rx7 outright

that will be a nightmare to put back together. I would suspect at least 10 grand to get it fully operational and driveable, it is missing a lot of little things. I would not do it, unless you got money to burn, it looks as if its been parted out, so you would have to replace all those pieces, its way too much stuff and will never be as good as it should be.

Honestly, if you are willing to go all out, and replace everything that the pix show. . . like all out. . . . not a restoration job, then I would say go for it. I'd see if they would sell it for $2500.00, just for ***** and giggles.

Just to get the car running tho, I personally don't think it's worth it at all, as you can get a blown motor FD for only $6000.00 - 7000.00 ish with all the parts not missing, and a running one for around 9k. The amount you'll have to put into that car to get it just running, will bring you close to those figures.

It will take a while to get everything done, but if you have the spare time, money, and dedication, then it will be well worth it. front clip will take care of your entire engine issue, and if the front clip includes the instrument cluster (most "complete" clips come with it) then you're already ahead of the game.

Again, it all depends on how much time and money you want to invest. This is just my personal opinion~

not only would you spend all kinds of money getting it complete but when you finally finished it, you would still have an Automatic FD............................that would be like having a pool without water!

^^ I think his clip may have the manual tranny on it, since it's a complete clip. At least he'll have the 4.3 gears. . . one step ahead

Thanks for the oppinions everyone, i was just considering it because, here in Los Angeles all the FDs go preaty high, and this one does have a clean title. Never has been crashed or anything like that. And for the front clip, we have has everything; engine, 5 speed trans, harnes, RHD cluster, ecu both front and rear suspension and couple of other parts. But the front clip is RHD so I dont know if everything will fit.
Thanks

hmm, ive put a few shells back together before and ive put back together worst, i dont htink its that bad..

wheres the cluster? how many miles? just make sure it comes with paper work and search through the dmv to see if it needs antyhing special to re-register it.

you dont want to have to pay fee's for it being not register for the last few years, or having to go through hassels that you wouldnt imagine.

price isn't too bad, but that is a LOT of work. try and add up the price for all the parts you need based on what you see in the classified section of this forum and see if it makes sense. could be a decent starting point for anyone looking to do a V8 conversion.

I was wondering if the mounts of the RHD 5speed are the same as the USDM trany mounts.
Thanks,

If you want to learn alot about these cars with hands on experience. Then thats a great find, I personally picked up one as well in a complete mess. I am not even going to post any info/pictures about it yet. It was a rolling wreckage, and currently looks like a skittle.

I did the same sort of restoration with my FC and its been such a learning experience I wanted to do it again with an FD. Plus now I know how things have been replaced and WHAT has been replaced.

Looks like a nice chunk of work. To be honest with you by the time you buy that, get the motor, and all the little parts that are missing (some you will probably not figure out till your putting it together) you will have dumped some cash into it. Might just be a better bet to find one that is running and in better shape might be cheaper in the long run.

If you do pick it up start a log with pics for all of us to follow your FD travels.

I would really consider if you are up for the task that is in front of you if you do decide to get it. I wouldnt just pick it up because you want an FD really bad. That there is a pretty good project car and is gonna probably take alot of time and money, not to mention elbow grease, to get into working order again.

If it were me i would pass just on the terms that its an automatic. But if you have a complete manual swap at your disposal, then more power to you. If you do go through with it and finish the project it will be a nice sence of accomplishment, thats for sure

Just to add my 2 cents....

Buying that car because good condition FDs are too expensive is a REALLY, REALLY BAD IDEA! That car would be good for someone who has the time and desire to rescue a car, not as a budget purchase!

Oh dont get me wrong, its not a budget puchase. I just said that one of the upsides of getting the car was that all or atleast most clean tittled FDs here in LA go for a preaty high price. I really apreaciate all you guys' comments, I mostly whanted to hear some feed back what I or my friend are getting into if one of us gets it. I have worked on project cars before, even if they didn't turn out the way I wanted. I have an IROC I have been working on for a while and its almost finished. It was the same as this FD it had no engine nor tranny, and now everything is on. Its most likely that my friend is going to get it seeing that he already has the front clip. Now we have to figure out what can be swaped. We dont have that much experience on FDs but we love cars in general. But as i said before thanks in posting your gus oppinions.

Unless you have a lot of money to burn and a lot of time on your hands, 3k is a bit much for that. I would offer 1500-2000 at best. Closer to 1500. That is a lot of work for 3k.

I vote no.

It would be cheaper for you to find an FD anywhere around in the US, fly out, check it out, buy it, and ship it back, than it would be to hunt for all the parts for this body.

Dont limit your market to cali. There are FD's all over the place. Heck there was one here in Utah that was a 94 for 13k with 50000 miles, Touring MT.

You could probably negotiate it down from there.

Anyway, my two cents. Good luck.

A wrecked FD is worth $3,000 in parts easy - but they took most of the valuable parts off of that and sold it already. Do some shopping around for parts (ie, motor and door skins) and you'll find out that you are going to end up paying more putting that back together then you would if you just buy one in good shape.

Not sure about the tranny mounts but the firewall is NOT symetrical = they are different between a LFD and a RHD.
