My initial thoughts were to get back into running shape and sell for a profit. But I have ALWAYS wanted an FD and know I probably wouldn't be able to bring myself to sell it. The bimmer would go first!

With that being said, It would probably be beneficial for me to buy a car in this shape. I have the time, I love to research, and I will probably learn more from this state.

I really enjoy my car, including the learning aspects - sounds like it would work for you too! (and I enjoy my wifes bimmer - great sedan - but a different type of car)
Flipping it for a profit sounds optimistic, buying to enjoy it sounds realistic.

There is lots of info on this forum to help you out, a few books are out about the car, and the factory manual is a must!

Good news for you. Keep your eye out for a complete car, don't buy a roller unless you are strictly going LS1, even then the car you were looking at wasn't a good canidate since SO MANY parts were taken out of it that would be needed for a LS1 street car.

For reference there was a 200k mile FD with original paint, no damage for sale semi locally to me for $5200, a running and driving car! It was an auto trans, but if you are considering buying a roller that typically has more missing than just the engine and trans the auto trans FD is a good way to go.

I just don't get the buying a roller thing, it creates this whole cycle of parting out FDs to a rolling shell, selling the shell to someone who is looking to buy parts to put it back on the road. It is a vicious cycle and something is always lost in the translation, cash is the first thing lost, second are parts and build quality. If you haven't had many of these cars it is really, really hard to know that you didn't put some parts back on. I did put my CYM back together but I am an exception to the rule, I had parted out a few FDs (wrecked ones) and had most of the missing parts laying around.

I am kind of in the same boat, I want a FC or FD, considering a roller for a project not a daily driver, and I found one for about 3k but it has no drive train and no title, not that good of a deal I have noticed after searching the site for a few months, but the more I look and longer I look, the better deals I have been finding.

Save yourself alot of time, and headache.... buy a running car. As mentioned, if you are considering a piston engine swap then there could be a benefit to getting a roller.

I will also say that there are VERY few FD's out there that don't need work.
So if you are worried about the "learning factor", don't worry, even a running car will keep you on your toes, and your wallet empty..... trust me.

For $4500 thats a good deal if you fall in over your head and feel its too much work for you you can always back out and part out/sell to get your money back!

What he said x100. You could absolutely make all of that back if you change you mind.
