I have the B&M SS. I really like it. It's a bit notchy, but you get used to it.

I agree with jpandes about the B&M, I had the Mazdaspeed in another fd it was'nt quite as notchy but also was'nt as short a throw, although it could have something to do with the **** I got with the B&M from Pettit. which is shorter.

yea, there all good shifters. I woudnt invest in a pettit becuase of its price. I would get either a B&M or Cs. I have a pettit but its for sale, i dont feel like changing it , so Im going to sell it. Its about 3-4 months old, it come out of my last fd. 180 shipped.

I did a poll on this awhile back...

I ended up getting a used mazdaspeed one....its smooth! Alittle notchy but probably not the shortest throws....I heard the c's and B&M are shorter from post of people who have tried them both...

For me I just don't want any rattles.....

After I got it installed and greased the end piece and upper ball...its much better...

Nice and smooth....BUT....some mild tranny whine at certain RPM's......dammit!

see here about the rattle issue

damn...mazdatrix site isn't loading but go to there short shifter section and read up...

Yeah I currently have a Mazdaspeed shortshifter and it's not as notchy as other shortshifters I heard. It's pretty smooth shifting, just like the stock shifter. C's and Mazdaspeed should have the same shift throws since they're pretty much exactly the same. At full throttle, I do get some whining noise like what 7racer said. But the rattling all depends on the car, not the shifter.

For $95 the eBay purchased B&M clone I have is an outstanding shifter. Although there is some very light rattle in 2nd and 4th, I can barely hear it in my heavily modified 7. The shifts are about 33% shorter than stock and the operation is absolutely flawless.

I notice that many of you use the term "notchy" to describe the feel of certain shifters. I have always heard the racing term "notchy" to describe something that hangs up or does not operate as designed. The B&M and its clones operate easily through the gears and never "hang" or "catch" as a smoother feeling shifter may at some times...but you positively FEEL the transfer between every single gate and the final engaging of every gear position. If this is your definition of "notchy" stay away from this shifter---you will hate it. For me, I want the tight physical feedback from my shifter...something I was not getting from stock.

the pettit is very smooth, but its not worth the money I dont think. I bought one for my lasr car and still have it. I was going to swap them out and sell my B&M (becuase the pettit cost more) , but I noticed that there was a blue block on top of the tranny that said B&M(the pettit didnt have this, when i tried to remove it, the top right bolt would not come all the way out. The bolt would hit the bottom of "frame"(I dont know what it called).
I cant tell any difference in the shortness of the shifts, I think B&M is like 35% and the pettit is 50%. There is a difference in quality, the pettit wins that.
I havent heared any vibrations in the B&m though. I notice when i cruising down the highway for a while, it vibrates like a **** but cant hear it.

Mazdatrix short shifter works very well for me.

It was the quickest mod to install. All of 5 minutes (not kidding).

Well worth it in my mind, makes the car a pleasure to shift.

I had a B&M and I didn't like it. I didn't like how it has it's own blue housing which made it hell for me to install.

It rattled, but a lot of SS do. The notchiness goes away after away. Just need to break it in.

I guess mine from Pettit is'nt a B&M, just the **** that I bought from them with it. Still it gives more of a solid mechanical feel when it goes into gear, than the Mazdaspeed.

On mazdatrix web site is the install....

it really is easy....

I don't have a garage and only have a cheapy one box generic tool set and I was able to install it without a problem.

Here is the link:
http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/ssinstal.htm

also on the page before there is a link about the short shifter rattle issue.

I use the B&M on my car and really like. Hard to beat for the price.
I also sell a mazdaspeed replica which is identical to the Pettit. I have driven a 7 with it and the throw is shorter than the B&M.

http://66.216.67.51/subcatmfgprod.asp?0=207&1=293&2=-1

Either of them work great and worth the money.

I have the B&M clone shifter and it's great. Positive feed back no rattle (ocassional wine) but this is generaly because I leave my hand resting on the shiter. It doesn't do it if I let go of the shifter. Kid of like riding the clutch I guess. i have an after market shift **** and throw is allot shorter than stock. I'm planning on cutting more off the shaft and rethreading it to drop the **** to just above the center console. The price was great at $95 plus shipping on ebay.
