Shifting manual with auto hold button?

When your in first gear ,how high do you bring rpms up before going to second. Is it ok to red line in first gear, could it cause problems in future,or is it made to do that since it 's a rotary?

I am assuming you mean you have a automatic tranny. and you are asking about the hold button and shifting the auto like a manual. Just making sure we are on same page.

If I were you I would just put the tranny in the highest gear like you are supposed to and drive like a automatic. I have a 98 millinia and the guy told me it would tear it up if I shifted it like a manual. Of course that is not a rx7 but i would think your tranny would get torn up. Also had a friend that had a ford ranger with a auto he always drove it like t was standard over time it eventually broke. of course that two isnt a rx7. I am sure some auto 3rd gen owners will give you further info...but ifit were me i wouldnt.

Shifting Auto Like a manual

The Hold button is just for that pourpose to allow you to control the shift. The hardest thing to do is not push the shifter too far when going from 1st to second. The thing to remember is that when you push the hold button it will stay in what ever gear you have selected....this is bad for the transmission if you are at a stopped position and have drive selected as it will take off in drive and not 1st gear. For waiting till redline to shift that would be your preference, nothing wrong with stretching the cars legs every now and then.

Well, the rev limiter will kick in at 7000 rpm on an auto tranny car, so it is not like you are going to hurt the ENGINE....but the tranny is not the most robust one in the world.....
If you start in "L" with the 'hold' button pushed, you will stay in 1st gear (out of 4).
If you stay in "L" without the 'hold' pushed, the car will shift to 2nd but stay there. I personally know that the car will run about 88 mph this way before the rev limiter kicks in....
If you are in slick conditions like snow, push the 'hold' button with the shifter in "D" and you have a VERY effective traction control system, the car is most driveable. This is one advantage the autos DO have over a manual.
Around town I usually sort of manually shift from "L" to "2" as the ECU must have been programmed by some damned enviro-freak that thought it was a GOOD thing for the car to stay at about 2000 rpm or less......
For "spirited" driving with an automatic, it is pretty much necessary to use the 'hold' button and manually shift the car to get the most out of it, otherwise you get that momentary hesitation when you stomp the gas and the car says, "What?......oh yes....GO...okay..."
My dealership friend says that the only thing he has ever heard from his mechanics regarding the transmission is that one should avoid manual downshifts that jerk the car.....for whatever that is worth.....

This is what i usually do,but i'm not sure if i should be doing it or not.At a complete stop put the shifter in low with the hold engaged,i then floor it and watch the rpms climb, but with the hold engaged i can go past normal shift point (7000) and past or into the 8000 redline range,i then bump the shifter into second and go into 8000 rpm range, and then I dissengage the hold button and that allows me to keep climbing past 88 mph cut off point ,but leave it in second for a bit, then bump it up to 3rd. But my question is how far can i stretch first gear, should i not be going past the red line mark,or is this a effective way of shifting an auto?

Ecu engine protection

If you push into the redline with the stock ECU it will automaticly start dropping off the rpm even though you have it floored (ecu engine protection) as long as it stays floored the rpm will continue to fall till you let off the gas, if you have dropped below redline then it will accept gas agine till redline and ecu kicks in all over again. I hope this is the answer your looking for.
