The first gear thing happend to me the other night. I'd say just make sure you grip it in the slot. Prob has to do with the severe stress on the drivetrain and it being an old tranny.

Missing 3rd and hitting 5th is just driver error and can be corrected with taking an extra 1/8th second shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Probably not enough time to win or lose a race by. Some people also say getting a short shifter makes it easier to not miss 3rd.

A torque brace is supposed to help the 3rd/5th shift miss. I have the same problem so I'll be trying the torque brace fix soon.

You have the classic symptoms of bad motor mounts or differential mounts. The torque brace is only a band-aid.

IMO it's a bad idea to install a torque brace unless you're sure the stock mounts are in good condition.

I just recently had the same problem poping out of first and bad vibration at high RPMs. The trans in my car is the original so i decided to replace it with a slightly used JDM one and it cured both of those problems. Car feels so crisp through the gears now its awesome.

dgeesaman and Mahjik make great points though. Make sure your mounts are legit before you install a torque brace. It can only quicken disaster then help.

Since he says the whole drivetrain is shaking, I say not likely. If it continues after replacing the bad mount/ppf/whatever, then have the tranny checked out.
