shifter for drag racing?

hi i read somewhere that they have a shifter in japan that steps down from 1st to 4th. you have to lift the lock up to go into 5th. you can lock the step down mecanism up so it shifts normal for normal driving....
anyone know of this?????

never heard of it, i doubt there is any real modifications for these trannies aside from a dog gear set from HKS which helps eliminate the case cracking issues with over 500WHP applications. aside from that the syncros would never allow speed shifting to the degree such as this without needing gears and syncros replaced very regularly.

it may be a slightly complex ratchet shifter(all the shift rods are buried inside the transmission unlike some of the old domestic manual gearboxes which is where manual ratchet shifters originated from) but i still fall back on the fact that it would do more harm than good and really beat on the transmission.

its a ratcheting shifter that is bolt-on with some modification, for all RWD manual transmissions.....

its not worth it..... it increases time it takes to shift to the next gear.... the only pro of this shifter is to eliminate missed shifts..... at the expense of everything else.

dont get it, waste of money.

why do you feel you need this anyway?

why does it take longer to shift gears with this shifter?

probably because it's easier to shift manually with a syncronized manual transmission. you can't slam them into gear like a hydraulic auto transmission or an old dog tooth gear set can. these gearsets are rather heavy and won't take the abuse without shattering parts which is why they are resistant to speed shifting, the transmissions were built to handle a bit of power but covering that and a large RPM spread is not an easy task to accomplish.

If you want the consistency in drag, why not just get a built auto? Like a th400 but im not sure of that fits in our cars.

Otherwise I can't see how much faster you wanna be with a manual. The brand name ss should be suffice for quick shifts without missing any gear. I have done some quick shifts in my car and I never missed. But I guess speed shifting is subjective. What I think is quick you might think is slow.

I have a mazdaspeed ss btw.
