Shaved handles?

Has anyone ever shaved handles on a FD? It seems like it would be alot less on an FD compared to other cars.

Where could I get a plate or soemthing like that fabricated so it will look like and bolt up like the stock door handle except not have any thing on the other side of it and have no handle on it?

It seems like if I can get a couple of these then all that would have to be done is install the door pops.

tell me if I'm not being clear and I'll try to clear it up.

Hey Zoomspeed,

I don't think shaved door handles would make a dramatic difference on a FD as would another car since our door handles are already above the main door skin. The handle is pretty much partitioned from the rest of the door. I'm not saying it wouldn't look different but a lot of people already have a hard time looking for my door handles . laters -- Tommy

I like the way they look now because they are not on actually on the door but still work normal. Haven't seen anything like you are explaining, sorry.

How would you get into your car if the poppers malfunction. Through the r-hatch I guess... Door handles are pretty camo now.

Actaully if I rember right I tink that one 7 with the scissor style doors has it (RE?). At least remeber seeing it in a pic before. It was such a subtle change that I didn't even notice it until someone pointed it out.

Dude, Dont Be A Rikki! our cars dont need shaven door handles that is for rikki's a.k.a (ricers)mazda spent plenty of time in a wind tunnel so you would not have to do gay *** stuff like that!!
Man, I'm sick of this! Everything that doesn't make you go faster is automatically gay and ricey? WTF! Honestly I dont' give a crap abouth how aerodynamic it would be w/ shaved handles. I just saw it and thought it would look nice. Whats so bad about that? If makaing your car look good is so gay, why don't they just make a box w/ some wheels and a V12 engine in it? That would be fast right? If making your car look better is so gay, why do we have companies from japan pumping out body kits for every single car, and people here in the states paying small fortunes for it. One of the reasons we got 7 is beacsue of how it looks. So whats so gay or "rikki" about making it look a little better? Especally if its such a small and subtle change?

No offense Dont_Be_A_Rikki. This isn't targeted at just you. Its just that I've seen many posts with that kind of attitude, and I'm just sick of it.

WELL to be honest with you, i bought the car because it looks sick!! and is fast as hell.so why do people have the need to put a bunch a bullshit fiberglass all over the car granted there are some very nice kits for the rx-7 and other cars but you should look at the lines on a rx-7 it is striking you dont need to put that all over the car but to each is own that is my point off view!! you can do what ever you want to your 7 or what ever car you own but i will the first person to chime in when it looks like ****!!bootm line. so have fun drive it like you stole it!!and happy easter!!
rikki
I get your point, I like the BODY of the 7 the way ti is, I'm just talking about a small samll change to make it look a little smoother. but whtever wiggles your noodle you know.

well, back to the orignal question, anyone know where or what kind of shop I can goto to get something fabicated in the same shape of the door handle assembly except w/o the handle and the internals?

yea... shaved doorhandles on an FD wouldnt make much of a difference in looks at all. youd probably be making things much harder on yourself too.

This is easy.....

Tools you'll need:

1) MIG welder (TIG would be better, but if don't have one then invest in a good MIG....or borrow one, they're easy to use)
2) Grinder
3) Sander with 80 grit sanding wheels
4) Jigsaw with a blade rated for mild steel.
5) 18 ga. steel sheeting....you only need a small amount...this is available in the steel section of hardware store.
6) Someone to do a quality paint job in black.

It's as simple as sanding off the old paint, making a template of the hole where the handle is out of cardboard and transfering it to the steel.....cut it out with the saw (wear ear protection), then weld away....burr it down and continue to weld to fill (if your seem wasn't smooth). Then go have it painted.

However, on most cars I can understand why you would want to do this....but on the FD.....why? It's nearly shaved as it is...

It would be kinda cool to see the door poppers work on the FD!!!

several reasons,

1. My handles are going south anyway (paints coming off, handle is bending, etc.) so I thought it might be a neat thing to do as oppse to going to the dealer and buying new handles. Id ont' know how much that would be, but I'm pretty sure its not cheap.

2. I havn't really seen anybody do it, so it would be something different

3. I think it would also add a small amount of theft protection.

mainly #1 and #2 though.

Is ther any type of shop I can take my handles too to have it done? I dont' know how to do any of the work that needs to be done.

Hypocrite? Why does your avatar have an Rx-7 with a body kit if you're so against them?

yea... the door handle is above the door, and next to the window. pretty much it means its shaved. there is no door handle on the body. personally i love the placement of the FD door handle.

The door handles on the FD are one of THE reasons it is so sweet. Just another unsolicited opinion.
