sequential turbo setup idea

not sure if this has been talked about before but i had an idea for a seq turbo setup.

would it be possible to use a tiny turbo, something out of efficiency by like 4500 rpms as the low end turbine. and have the second be a real big one. and you could use the first for instantaneous low end power and then have it go to the top end at like 4000 rpms?

i was thinking you could maybe use one of those NOS controllers that have the little chips to control when the actuator kicks in. if you could use that to control the valve between the turbos you could make a sorta stand alone seq turbo setup.

the benefit would be to have a smooth power band while having the benefit of a large turbo that makes high peak HP. sorta like defeating turbo lag all together while still being able to dump into a large high power turbo.

why wouldn't this work?

It's done on the Cosmo and ArtGuy has a similar setup with his M2 twins as well. I don't think the wheel difference is as dramatic as your proposing though. I couldn't tell you what if any advantage there would be.

And how would you properly pre-spool the big secondary turbo? It won't work. Even if you could somehow get it to work (NOS helping the pre-spool?), it would be more complicated than the stock-twin setup.

It's not a V8. You are never going to have good low-end response coupled with a huge top-end. If you want a high horsepower car, you are going to have to accept the loss of low-end and increased spool time that a larger single turbo will have.

this is just an idea i'm shooting out there.

the only thing NOS related would be the little electronic box that some use to initiate the spray at a certain RPM which is defined by a little fuse like chip that you slide in the box. it wouldn't be used to spray nitrous, it would be used to activate the valve.

i was thinking you could maybe use that so you wouldn't have such a peaky powerband. i don't want a high horsepower car perse'. i want a long smooth powerband not something that's going to start off dead then climb almost straight up. talking lots of area under the curve.

maybe the wheel difference wouldn't be so drastic but the point was to get a turbo that would be easy to spool up to start the process. rotaries have poor low end power so i was thinking if you could use a small turbo to get it on it's feet then have some sort of gate or valve dumping flow over to the larger turbo you could have more power under the curve and a smoother powerband. almost like a dual stage turbo setup where you have one kick in then halfway through you get into the bigger one and you get hit with another burst of power to take you to redline. this way if you ever got into a situation where you fell under optimal rpms for the larger one you'd still have something to keep you going until you could get the other spooled.

i'm slightly confused now though because Goracer says it's been done then rynberg is saying it's not possible. how is it not possible if it's been done?

how does ArtGuy run his turbo setup?
