Question to sell or to part out dilemma

A combination of rain and an amazing douchebag Chevy Silverado driver recently provided me with a wrecked FD. Now if there is any good news about this situation, you know the one where my dream car that I've owned and maintained/built up for the last 3 years now was totaled by my insurance company, is that the damage did not effect any of the engine or drivetrain. The frame buckled and twisted a bit. Starts up fine though.

Now Ive since bought a 94 with the insurance, and I'm looking to transplant my internals to the new FD, and part out everything else on the old car.

Here is where the dilemma comes in. I have a friend who went to collision repair school and has friends in the area with the equipment to possibly fix the framework. He has always loved rx7s and idolized mine when I first moved to here 5 months ago. He wants to buy it outright and doesn't really care about the cosmetic damage at this point.

I'm torn because I would think you could get a lot more money out of parting a car out. I also would love helping out people on the forums to make their cars what they want them to be: running great and looking nice. At the same time I come from tinkerer stock, and I love to take stuff apart, replace and repair, and in general really know what I own; so tearing down an FD would be a great experience imo. Yet this FD was my dream car, I loved it and was demolished when I got out of it for the last time. I would love to see it driving again and I hate to think about the fact that I'm partially responsible for taking the low FD population down another. Plus a large sum of cash now would let me move on and get started on building the new FD up.

How much have other people got in the end of a full part out? How much would be fair for me to ask my friend considering the damage? What are your thoughts?

THis is my opinion ... , IF this friend of your IF AND ONLY IFF this friend of yours has the resources , the dedication , and the love for hte car to go through what it needs .. sell it to him .

otherwise part it

I sold my old car to someone who had all these huge ambitions for it , instead all that was done was the car got a bunch of dents had some hooker walk all over the hood .. overheated it a couple of times ..

I've got to agree. If he will bring it back to life sell it, but if not part it out.

part it out, put your white FD together then just sell off the rest of the parts... why sell the car then have to go running around looking for parts for your white FD?

Id part it out. If you don't mind waiting and not in dire need of money part it.

That's what I'm doing to my fd. Because I know I can't get the price I want selling as a whole.

A part out would be nice since I get to keep my engine as a spare since it only has 25 k on the rebuild.

Well, I planned on taking the 99 spec turbos, downpipe and k&n intake out of the 93. Wish I could take the wheels but one of them died in the accident. =[

Ive already swapped the stock lights and b&m short shift. So Im slowly piecing together my new dream car, more complete this time around, YAY FOR BLACK INTERIOR. But I sadly cant keep both, I do need to decide, the part out or sale proceeds will go towards the new car upkeep and tuning and so forth.

Does anyone have actual numbers or at least a rough estimate to what a full part out would take in?

transfer over whatever parts you need to get the other car in good shape and part out the rest or sell it as a whole....

most rolling FD chassis run between $3-6k

I see, thanks. Heh, the white 94 I picked up was from a guy in Killeen, small world. At this point Im leaning pretty heavily towards parting it out.

Wow really??

When you say rolling chassis, you mean with or without an engine/trans??

take the engine and every thing you might possibly need for your new fd and part it out. i doubt you'll get much more for it whole with the amount of work that needs to be done to fix it. might as well save yourself money down the road, by taking what you need now.

Part it out or fix it yourself.

I personally don't like selling things to friends, what if he can't fix it and has to junk it? Will you feel guilty? Will he (with no reasonable standing) try to ask for some of his money back?

I'd rather sell it to a stranger.

Take what you can use now from the old then sell it.

It could be years until you need that other rebuilt engine and you'll need to store it properly as well as maintain it to keep it in usable condition, I don't think you can just plug all the holes and leave it in garage though I'm just speculating at this point.
