Question Searched, no joy: Can the in tank fuel level float be re-calibrated?

I only read 3/4 full on my quantity when it is completely full. Before I start inhaling gasoline fumes (which might improve my personality ) has anyone re-calibrated the in-tank float/sending unit, or is it even possible? I have to assume that's where the problem is. I have had the pump out once to put a new filter on the bottom but don't believe that I damaged it.

The float looks just like one in your toilet tank. I reckon with trial and error you could just bend the rod until your gauge reads correctly.

Check the sender with a volt meter as well. It's possible that the upper range is worn, dirty or both.

AH, thanks DamonB, I just knew you would be out there lurking! I've waited until I filled her up full before dipping in there. Can't wait...

Next question: Is it OK to smoke while doing this?

My fuel level guage is really inconsistant, but I cant really be bothered to sort it out. There seem to be loads of more important things. I just fill her up when I get to about 175 miles. At least you guys dont have to pay 80 pence a litre.

Yeah, I'm kind of on a crusade to get EVERYTHING fixed.

I paid $1.51 per GALLON for Premium unleaded yesterday. (That's about 1/4 what you pay - damn!)
and most Americans bitch about the cost of petrol!

Oh, well, once we take over Iraq's oil fields maybe the price will come down a little.....

you may want to play with the gauge while its out and see if its not reading full because the floatisnt floating right or because of some electrical thing.

i would just open up the gauge cluster and move the fuel needle up 1/4 tank. there's no need to open up the tank and it would not be very easy to modify the thing to the way you wanted very easily. it is also possible that the float has partially come off the wire it is held on by and is just sort of flapping around because it is held on by 1 side instead of 2 making it read lower at a full tank since the float would be somehow floating vertically instead of horizontally.

Yes you should smoke around the job. Use the same torch you will have for loosening those pesky bolts on the sending unit to light up.

then, all problems will be solved. Not fixed, necessarily...

Ooohh. It'll match those neat Hot Wheels flames on the side...

Good luck, and let us know how it goes, 'k? The manual gives the ranges the sender should have for various positions (like you DIDN'T know...).
