RX7's and Supras rivalry ... whats the deal?
This may be a stupid thread, but since its my first post pls dont ban me
I'm a total newbie here, i mean ive never owned a Jap car before. So far all i have had are German ones.
Anyway I'm thinking about getting MKIII RX7 94+ in all its beauty. Some of my friends have Supras and 300ZX's and they tend to bash RX7 and its rotary engine. As i said i'm a newbie so i usually just nod and go by my business. Main reason i'm sticking with RX7 thought is cos i think it has the best bodydesign and i bet this is one of the cars that will never age in sence of the bodydesign.
My real question: is there somekinda IRL rivalry or level that these cars have, i mean where does RX7 and supra stand to one another. Is there some kinda difference between the owners of RX7's and Supras? Age, sex, weight, whatever? Shed some light on this weird subject pls
I mean it cant be only $ that makes a person worthy!

you should really search this 3rd gen forum, there was a big post not too long ago started about who thought the supra or rx7 had better better design and then it turned ugly and started involving all sorts of performance factors as well....
basically its like this (and this is my opinion, but these opinions are shared by many in this club)
rx7
- beautiful/timeless
- handles turns flawless
- able to make big power, but requires $$
- not the most reliable thing under the sun, don't expect big power until you fix everything first
supra
- bad design ("pig")
- highway/rolling start monster
- big power with little money (basic BPU)
- engine is bulletproof
- can't handle very well (compared to 7)
- launching is impossible... please reffer to joke below:
Q: What does a 500hp Supra, a 700hp Supra and a 900hp Supra have in common?
A: 12 second time-slips!
basically it's what do you want? just SEARCH in this forum for like 'supra' or 'rx7 vs supra' and you will get a lot of opinions/facts... before you go and buy an rx7, read around this forum and make sure it's for you! it takes a lot of dedication and knowledge to maintain one well... good luck!

I think the rotory essentially has a bad name among those that don't know much about them (and some that do) because everyone and their friend knows of someone that's blown one. I think personally Mazda probably dropped the ball a little on some things like coolant seals, some gauges, etc, but also I think you have to take into account that very few people drive stock 7's. Most any car is going to start having engine problems as people mod them and then start finding the weak points. I think turbo cars suffer the worst from this because it's so easy to turn the boost up....
Personally I am in awe of the design. Such a tiny simple engine. You can't show me any other mass produced 1.3L engine that can fairly easilily and reliably pump out 400rwhp. And no cars come to mind that are as light-weight and still have 50-50 weight distribution.
Was gonna make this longer but gottta go...

The rivalry stems from the fact that both cars are high performance Japanese imports that enjoy an enthusiastic, devoted following. Many people seem to think that one of them has to be "the best", and arguments start over which car it is. Stick around for a while and you'll see this debate over, and over, and over. And over.
There isn't an answer. It's up to each individual person to decide which car is "best". If YOU like the RX-7, get the RX-7, and who cares what your friends think/say anyways? One thing's for sure, though. There may not be a "best" car, but the RX-7 sure as hell is the best LOOKING.

the supra is quite a bit "bigger" car. the only thing that i really don't like is the headlights
but the taillights make up for it.

it really all boils down to rotary vs. piston. the supra and the rx-7 both are marque cars (the best that the manufacturer has to offer). you cannot put them head to head and compare them. you have to take into account the differences in basic design.
Mazda engineers had a easier time of designing the RX-7, the 13B-REW is physically smaller than the 2JZ and 3JZ engines, it therefore could be set further into the center of the car to give it those superb handling characteristics that we all love. that can be summed up in one word, FINESSE.
the Supra on the other hand is a different style of sports car all together, first it accomplishes the same that the RX-7 does, but because of it's design it does it with brute force instead of finesse.
comparing the Supra and RX-7 is like comparing a SA22C and a 84 corvette. on paper the corvette should be extremely faster than the RX-7 but in the real world they are evenly matched. the reason: power to weight ratio.
i have driven my RX-7 and a friends Supra around Laguna Seca, both of them not stock, and i love both of them but they require different driving styles, the RX-7 being nimble and the Supra being brutal.
i think that both of the cars are kick ***, and to each his/her own.

i've had the chance for the past week to drive my bro's 94 supra quite alot. it's bpu w/ a fmic (some guys include this in the bpu but just wanted to be clear). so i'll give a couple of thoughts:
1 the supra in no way is ugly. it might be big and oafy, but the curves on it are incredible esp when you get a body kit.
2 it is a BIG car. when driving up on the freeway it feels huge compared to my fd and took a little while to get use to.
3 the car is a freeway monster. before he got his fmic, we raced from a 70-~120 mph roll 3 times. my mods are in my sig, and on low boost he pulled ever so slightly on me. but on high boost he easily put 2 car lengths on me.
4 toyota makes reliable cars from their old school corrola, celica to the supra. there are no "reliability mods" to do first, and is easy to make big numbers out of it w/ not alot of $
5 everyone will say the rx7 will outhandle the supra and is so much better in the twisties but i don't see how it is. according to motor trend the fd had .91 g and the supra had .93g with nearly identical slalom speed.
http://www.mkiv.com/publications/mot...4/mt594_08.jpg
so by no means is the rx7 so superior to the supra. i'm not a professional driver, but i think they handle just about the same and would agree with what greenhornet said about driving them.
what it comes down to is personal preference. it seems like alot of the time it comes down to the styling of the two cars for people's choices. i prefer my rx7, i like the way it handles and love driving it. but when i want to stomp on cars on the freeway i'll take the supra out. just my .02

i think both cars are pretty damn amazing. they both made huge steps forward in the performance and styling aspect of the autoworld.
but can you just imagine what it would be like if the mk 4 supras had one, if not a few, of the same type of problems the 3rd gen has? it would be a completely different ball game.

Well said GreenHornetFD3s!!
I am not a real big fan of Supras...but I do respect the car...Both the FD's and Supras are High end cars. These are real sportscars..not ricers(ie..honda,neons..etc but no disrespect at all) and both cars are in the classes with Corvettes, Vipers and so on.
I bought my FD because it is a reflection of myself. It is very unique, stylish, extreme power, sleek and most importantly fast. With a weight ratio of 50/50...the fd don't need much horse power to be very fast. Yes the car is high maintainence but it is a high performance car. Any high performance vehicle is very expensive to maintain.
Supras are very fast cars...but it takes a lot of HP to push it!
All you need to ask yoursef is..."What car will I look better in...?

anyone ******* the supras is nuts.
sure they are heavy...but they are a cruiser...not a nimble car like the seven. they ride decent and are well built. they haul ***. they were built for different driving styles.
if you want to rip on cars...rip on camaros or firebirds...the supra is a beauty queen compared to those.
what about that butt *** ugly rx8 and its undertorqued hamster under the hood?
come on guys...the supra and the seven put jap racers on the map. they both cleaned house on the vettes and camaros of the day and both are worth owning.
the joke about the 12 second time slips cracked me up though.
you could add...what does a 500, 550, and 600hp rx7 have in common?
multiple motors and tons of headaches....
hehehe
just kiddin boys...i love my seven...and twenty two grand in mods and maintenance over the past couple years shows the love.

i like both cars, but i chose my fd for many reasons, i like the every aspect of the fd, looks, power, agility...it's fun to drive, i do respect the supra's though, for i have had my *** handed to me by a couple of them, but that was like 100 hp ago.....but to each his own, supra owners say rx-7's suck and rx-7 owners say supra's suck....i will talk with either if they aren't stupid or stuck up..just my .02
