Rx7's are a bad deal
THis sucks, I just found out that Rx7s engines usually only last about 80,000 miles! I payed $22,000 (Canadian) for one with 70k on it a month ago. I have no money to repair the engine! I only get 5,000 more miles out of it!?? My lasted car lasted 300,000 and it only cost me 2500. I can beleive this. Why does anyone buy these heaps? BTW, yes i love my Rx7 now while it still works.

Perhaps you should have researched the car more before you bought it. By the way, sometimes motors go out at 130K miles, or 60K miles. It all depends on how the car was maintained. The RX-7 is NOT a heap! Before you buy your next car find out what you are getting into!

You can always sell it.
However, as Import Convert mentioned, there is no standard mileage when an FD engine is just going to "give out".
It really depends on the maintenence. Since you just got yours, it's a good idea to go ahead and get all the fluids and filters changed so you know where you stand.

The Rotary Engine is probably one of the best, yet least undersood, hence most feared powerplants to ever stick it's head out into the automotive industry. In terms of performance, the twin turbo RX7 is probably one of the best production sports cars the world has seen. This thing is a work of art, with power, looks, handling, and safety. Where our Supras have a power to weight ratio of about 16:1, the RX7 steps on the scene with a ratio of 11:1. From the factory this car will outperform about everything else on the road, and while not considered a "Super Car", it is easily capable of performing to "Super Car" standards with very little
modification.
The weak link in the RX7's 13B-REW powerplant is known as the Apex Seal.
This seal on each of the Rotor's three tips acts in a similar manner to a head gasket, but do to the design of this powerplant, is extremely prone to damage when the engine experiences lean conditions. I will stress that the RX7 WILL NOT tolerate lean conditions at all. People have blown Apex Seals just from the extra boost created by installing a free flowing exhaust system. As for blowing around 60,000 miles, this is not the whole truth. It is true that a lot of these cars will be on their second engine by this mileage, but almost of these engine failures can be traced back to lean conditions. Whether it is from a clogged fuel filter, a leaky injector,or
a tired fuel pump, the slightest amount of lean condition will be detrimental to this engine. They will however, make big power, and last a long time if they are tuned properly and well maintained. There are several people making in excess of 360 rwhp with stock apex seals. If your engine is needing rebuild, a slightly larger 2mm apex seal will give a little more cushion, but not much. Avoid the mistake of the even larger 3mm apex seal as it will do more harm than good in most applications.
To wrap up my thoughts, I can afford a twin turbo RX7, but I drive a 1987 Toyota Supra. I know the 13B-REW inside and out, yet I drive a 1987 Toyota Supra. The twin turbo RX7 is a better car, yet still, I drive a 1987 Toyota Supra. Why? I cannot afford to keep up a twin turbo RX7. I ordered an exhaust gasket master set for a 1993 twin turbo that my shop just did a 360 rwhp build up on...$450.00 from Mazda...for exhaust gaskets. Twin Turbo...hell of a car...not for the faint of heart...not for those without deep pockets.

"WAHHH I thought I bought a super car " Funny to hear them rant over in their piston world.

Don't panic. We have 3rd Gen owners on the Forum who have over 100,000 miles on their engines. As someone else said, good maintenance is the key.
Overheating and detonation are the main engine killers.
Do the following things, and you'll greatly increase your chances of long engine life.
Change the coolant.
Change the fuel filter.
Change the oil (this goes without saying).
Change or clean the air filter.
Make sure the cooling sytem and the drive belts are in working order.
Use the highest octane gas you can get in your area.
PS, make sure the air is purged from the system when you change the coolant. This will involve removing the filler cap and refilling after running the engine. This step will have to be repeated a number of times until the coolant levels off at the little hole in the filler neck. You may have to fill, run the engine, recheck and refill as many as half a dozen times or more until the air is out of the system.

...then sell it and buy a Corolla...you'll get more mileage and better gas mileage

It obvious you did about ZERO research on what appears to be such a large and very important purchase for you. Your comparing apples to oranges here... An FD vs a 1983 Toyota Tercel?
I think you need to rexamine the reasons why you purchased an FD...If it's cheap reliable fill & forget daily transportation, I'm going to fall off my chair laughing
Do a search and you'll find plenty of people above the 80k range with the original engine. Granted to achieve that you'll need impeccable maintenance (meaning time and money)...something I doubt your car will receive.
