So far...

Some back ground on my car...it has 118K on the chassis...and probably about 50-60K on a reman.

I bought the car with 117.5K on it for $9600. When I bought it, it idled like crap, and only boosted 8-6-7.

Well, so far I have done mainly mechanical stuff:

Used turbos...$300 (stock ones started blowing oil after boost problem was fixed)
HKS Dp.....$200
HKS CB....$300 (stock one had a crap muffler welded to it, fixed boost problem)
Fuel filter...$60
Vacuum lines...$40
Solenoids...$220 (broke during vacuum line install)
Oil pressure sending unit...$55
Clutch switch...$10 (fixed hunting idle)
Spark plug wires....$30
Antenna mast...$22
B&M shifter...$175 (stock one was floppy as heck)
Gaskets and couplings...$100
New OEM radiator...$200
Water temp gauge...$50
A/F gauge....$60

I still need to do the following:

New tires...$500 (crap Futuras on it)
Alignment...$100 (pulls to the left like crazy)
Bushings...$550 (clunks like crazy)
Paint entire car...$2500 (small door dings, and faded paint)
Shocks and springs..$600 (stock ones are shot)
Rebuilt tranny...$500 (has 2nd gear syncro problem)
Rebuilt engine..$2000 (has marginal compression....6.3-6.5 @250rpm)

I am planning on being done with the project in about 5 years total. I am about 6 months into it. Almost all the labor has been done by me.

It is a struggle, and some times I feel like selling it, and buying a Supra or Corvette. However, the RX7 is so rare, and good looking I do feel good about fixing it up. I still get looks whenever I drive it.

How about everyone else?

Patrick

Most of the items I've had to replace or upgrade are in my sig. As for the rest:

-new radio antenna
-Bosch wipers & blades
-Alpine head unit
-new A/C relay
-new rear main oil seal
-new fuel injectors and o-rings
-new radiator hoses
-new oil metering pump (ouch!)
-silicone vacuum tubes
-black blanket (no rear hatch cover!)

That all I can think of for now. Happy rotoring everyone!

I forgot, I don't have a spare tire either. I have to pick up one of those too.....

And a few other things:

As well as a new front end probably. Mine is pretty warped.
Also, new head light covers. They are pretty cracked underneath.

Later,

Patrick

Only $2500 to repaint the whole car? Where did you find that deal? Let me know ... I'll be banging at their door real soon.

The bushings are a must if its clunks right now. I replaced the pillow mount bushings in the rear and it was like night and day. Quiet (relatively with a stiff shock setting) and definitely a LOT smoother. I have to replace my shocks (GAB R's) and I think I'm going with the Koni yellows. I wouldn't sell yourself short on the shocks ... they make a world of difference.

I have the 5th gear synchro problem, but I've heard upwards of $1200 to get that fixed. For now, I'm satisfied with the simple art of double-clutching.

I've thought about re-doing the headlights, but the kits (RE, C-West, etc.) are just not worth the price IMO.

Until I make it big in the stock market, SCCA S-stock and maybe a fair-priced paint job.

I am thinking $2500 to paint the entire car...minus door jambs and engine bay. Because I am going to have the car repainted the same color it is...or very close.

Maybe I am off base a bit. I don't know. What do you think?

Where are the pillow mount bushings?

Call Rob Golden at Pineapple racing. He quoted me like $500 to rebuild the tranny for my second gear problem. That is, if I took the tranny off and shipped it to him, and he sent it back to me.

Been there! Done that!

Added Racing Beat Type 1 Spoiler and repainted with clear coat @ 105,000 for $1,500.

Rebuild @ 114,000, plus ACT Clutch & 8.5# Alum Flywheel, Pettit TKT CAI, 3" SS Downpipe, Power Pulley,
Greddy Turbo Timer, Boost Gauge, Kenwood CD w/Boston Acoustic Pro 6.5's in doors, Boston Acoustic Rally 6's in rear with alpine amp & Vega 8" sub tube nestled under rear strut bar, brushed alum dash overlay, and many interior plastics.

We all are trying to preserve the integrity of the Rex!

After all, it's only money, and if we don't spend it on our cars now, what are we going to do with it when we're 75?
