rx7 engine problems
i am considering buying a 93 rx7. It is an automatic with 49k original miles. It has never been raced and is completly stock. the owner is 65 years old and is selling this mint car for $14,500. I understand that these cars are prone to engine failures at around 60k. Is this true and is this a good deal? I would appreciate any and all feedback.

It's all in the maintenance. As you may have heard, rotaries requrie much more delicate and proper maintenance than a piston engine - no skipping corners like letting your oil change go overdue by a couple hundred miles!! Stuff like that.
3rd Gen's are the most unreliable of all rx-7s since they are needlessly complicated, with lots of gadgets and gizmos (i love saying that!) which means mroe things to go wrong. Usually a stock 3rd gen should be able to get anywhere from 60,000 - 120,000 miles on the engine depending on how it was driven and maintained.
Automatic is not desirable generally, but also, that can indicate that the owner is not the type of person who likes to drive the car fast and crazy (if it's the original owner still).
I am not sure of the value of a 3rd gen in your area - I'm from Canada and I know 3rd gens here can be EASILY double what they are in some states. Price sounds decent to me though.
How much do you know about rotary engines or rx-7s? I don't want to sound too critical, but I HIGHLY recommend anyone considering one learns as much as they possible can before buying one. Read up on the forum all day every day, and search the net for info.

i always liked the way the car looked. I never realized that they would require so much attention. I want a cool car but need it to get to work every day. I went to www.rx7turboturbo.com and read how to buy an rx7. I have to say i am a bit flustered. I told the guy i would buy the car but i guess i didnt know what i was getting into. I figured japanese=reliable. If this was my second car maybe this would be a better idea. thanks though
