also i found some good information on import late RX7s here that i havent read before..

I am constantly asked about importing 96 and later RX-7's into the USA from Japan.

Here are a few things I have picked up to answer some of these questions.

How much would a dedicated sports car enthusiast be willing to pay for a latest RX-7 "Spirit R", Type-RS, Type-RZ or "Type R Bathurst R" edition? Additionally, how many would seriously put down money, and commit to buying a latest RX-7?

With the current exchange rate (JPY116 to USD1), a typical latest RX-7 costing around 3.5 Mil Yen would cost around US$30,000.

However, add an estimated $15000-$25000 in modifications to make the car street legal in the US, and the cost is now in around $45,000 - $55,000. Add shipping, prep, dealer fees, etc... and a latest RX-7 could easily over $60,000.

Keep in mind, the latest RX-7 sold in Japan behaves almost nothing like the 93-95 RX-7 we have in the US. The turbo system was refined, it produces 30+ more horse power from the factory, the torque curve is much nicer, and most importantly, the car has an even more balanced and refined suspension.

If you think people rant and rave about the handling of current Mazda's like the MPV to the Tribute to the MP3 to the Miata, imagine what they've done with their flagship model!

If there is enough interest in the car, the price of modification could go down to $10,000... So, would you be willing to pay $40,000 - $45,000 for a latest RX-7? Let us know what you think? This might not be as far fetched as it sounds, and if there is enough serious interest, who knows what could happen!

Remember! Cars in Japan, England, Australia and New Zealand are all "Right Hand Drive".

Cars sold everywhere else in Europe and in the United States are "Left Hand Drive", so if you are looking to import one of these cars, make sure you understand what it is.

Here is the simulation of importing a latest RX-7 to the USA

A legal importer in Southern California has this advice:

An latest RX-7 FD3S series 8 costs about $25,000 in Japan.

In order to import the vehicle to the US legally it must be imported though the legal importers.

The cost for us to legalize a car for you varies from $15,000 - $35,000 depending on the year of the vehicle. This does not include shipping , bonds ,tariffs , custom brokerage fee , and associated shipping fees.

The additional cost varies as the bond costs (150% of the value of the vehicle), = $37500, and tariff cost (2.5% of the value of the vehicle),= 625, varies with the value of the vehicle , also shipping can be roll on/roll off or container, = $4,000 - $5,000 (Japan to USA).

In addition, you are going to have pay an Independent Commercial Importer (ICI) some money for importing the vehicle and warranties: Non-U.S.-Version Vehicles: Individuals are not permitted to import non-U.S.-version vehicles (unless otherwise excluded or exempted.)

These vehicles must be imported (entered) by an Independent Commercial Importer (ICI) having a currently valid qualifying certificate of conformity for each vehicle being imported. The ICI will be responsible for performing all necessary modifications, testing and labeling, as well as providing an emissions warranty identical to the emissions warranty required of new vehicles sold in the U.S.

(My 1981 RX-7 was imported from Japan back in 1982 and I did all the documentation by myself. As you can imagine, I had a very, very, very difficult time making my car legal. It took about 6 months and cost me $$$! Now time changes and the situation is much harder. My suggestion is to consult legal importer in your area before you take any action.)

Add in the fact that you are going to have to wait either 30 days or for the car to pass an inspection. At which point you get the car and the bond back.

So you have to have at least $70,000+ cash on hand at any one point + (what ever the costs to make the car able to pass inspection) + (ICI brokerage fees).
