Royal Purple says "OK to run synthetic in rotaries"

Just quoting a write-up on SevenStock5 where Royal Purple oil says that it's ok to run synthetic in rotaries. Just change the oil in the turbo versions (and filter) every 2500 miles. http://www.mazdausa.com/mazdaspeed/t...otary_news.asp

Perhaps this is one of the most credible 'yeh' vs. 'ney' for synthetic since it was discussed at a Mazda sponsored event.

I think one of the Royal Purple guys has been road racing rotaries for a while so it isn't just a rubber stamp "yes, our product will work for you" type of thing. I've been running it for a year or so. That isn't a long time, but I haven't had any problems.

I've heard rave reviews for Royal Purple from a few of the local auto-x club members. I plan on switching over once I get my new turbos in.

I don't like mobil 1 IMO it makes your car leak oil. I have been using royal purple in rotarys for 3 years

Mobil 1 is fine for rotaries, too.

Mobil 1 may be more likely to leak because a) it is synthetic and b) Mobil 1 tends to be thin for its weight. Note that oil weights (like 10W-30) are not a measurement of the oil thickness, but rather a specification that has a lot of room for different thicknesses.

i still don't know what the difference is between their normal synthetic oil and their "race" oil like W51 or the difference between 20w50

how would mobil one be more likely to leak because it is synthetic? then wouldnt royal purple also be more likely to leak, because it is synthetic too? the reason i am asking is because i want swicth to synthetic when i do my turbo upgrade. i just had my motor rebuilt 5000 miles ago so i should be fine if i choose to use sythetic right?

so how often do you guys change your oil now that you use synthetic? I used to do it every 1000 miles when I was using dino, but how long can synthetic stay in there?

If you have an old engine, you might have a lot of sludge and varnish built up. Synthetic will wash that junk away and you may get a leak as a result. All synthetics will do this, though not necessary resulting in leaks unless you have the stated conditions. Mobil 1 is synthetic, and I was just comparing it to mineral oil rather than to Royal Purple specifically.

what weight are y'all using?

I have always used dino oil 20W-50 in summer
10W-30 in winter for quicker warm up and to help out the bearings...

Nope, absolutely not. Mazda corp did not have any input or support of Royal Purple synthetic being used in rotary engines.

I would be curious to see what Mazda has to say in regards to the use of synthetic oil after the introduction of RX-8 since it appears that every Joe Schmoe is using it without any obvious deleterious effects.

You would think if Mazda did not support the conclusion that synthetic was OK in rotaries then they would not have posted that writeup on THEIR web site. Mazda could have easily delete this text or commented on it not being correct...

I use the red label Mobil 1 "For turbocharged and supercharged engines."

I've used royal purple for the past 3 years, ever since talking to David Canitz (sp) who is the one Max was referring to above back then. No problems to speak and it gives me a little piece of mind when running the turbos hot, that the synthetic can better stand the heat.

I have just found that in most cases moble 1 has made some higher milage cars to leak do to the fack there is the sludge build up like Max siad, I have heard that htis is do to the aditive package moble 1 uses cleans alot better, I don't know which one works better for rotorys but I am fond of royal purple.

From: Shaw AFB, SC finally close to home!!! yeah!
I have been using Mobil 1 syn, 10w-30 for about 8 months now on my 90k mile FD, and so far no leaking at all, but I guess you never know! (knock on wood.) So far, I like it a lot better than non-synthetic.
Thanks for posting that new info, 'rotary-tt' , that's good to know!!

David Canitz is the one that races rotaries (n/a) at Royal Purple. Great guy. Like Tim, I switched after talking with him at length about synthetics. I'll have to dig up my notes and post them on the forum. There's some good information from him in there as to why RP works in rotaries (for those of us unfortunate enough, sniff, sniff, not be have been present as 7stock).

I just don't see the benefit if you change it every 2K or so miles anyway... You could use $20 bills to light campfires too, but what's the point?

The $20 is insurance for the turbos even if it does nothing for the motor. Since both the motor and turbos cost about the same (actually the motor is cheaper), I run synthetic to sleep better about my turbos. The car does noticeable spool up faster using synthetic. I only drive my FD about 4000mi/yr so changing the oil twice a year won't put me in the poor house
