Rotary Extreme Vmount, or homemade one?

hey every1,
I'm trying to decide...I LOVE the v-mount setup, but im not a fan of the $2300 pricetag. I did see my friend's NPR medium IC mounted as a HMIC. I got to thinking....if i tilted it down a little, and reversed the way the radiator sits in there, couldnt i make my OWN v-mount? Opinions on this? Also Water Injection is a definite future mod as well for me.

I'm sure a homemade V-Mount is doable. Anything can be done with the right time and resources... I think the price of the kit is heavy, but it does include the price for R&D. There would be (I imagine) a LOT of trial and error (Like my friggin single) and buying a kit cuts out that portion of the time and at the same time adds to the expense. It would be awesome to see someone go at it... Why not right? Anything is worth a shot as long as it's well thought!

if you reversed the way the radiator sits in there it will heat the water instead of cooling it just kidding hehehe; if you got a welder and chop saw, and have the skills to weld up the piping, i say go for it.

good luck

If you can do it, do it in Quantity! and sell your own kits to make some money!

I think some will be interested...including me (but not right now)

haha, once i get the cash, i think im gonna give it a shot. Only problem is the NPR isnt too deep, so it would be at a pretty nice angle. The large one would look more like the large xtreme vmount.

I have the RE set-up and you might be able to do it but don't plan on driving your car for a long time. There is alot more to the kit than meets the eye. Tom

aight aight. Now the question is, would i be better off with a HMIC NPR medium IC with water injection and a fluidyne radiator?

I think you could get consistent low intake temps with water injection and only a small SMIC. More consistent than any IC alone. Tom

yea im looking from the cost-effective side of it all. No doubt the V-mount is hella bling under the hood, but for the performance gains and cost, i think i'll go HMIC and WI. It loses some bling in the process, but i still think its pretty kool lookin.

yea, but i dont need a HUGE one, and it probably costs even more cash for not much more benefit unless u exceed the 500hp mark which i wont be doing.

Hey Zack you mean sort of like this?

It is much less expensive, but the time is a real killer if you are impatient or want to do it right.

The thing I have found about it is that if I didn’t have another driver and the desire to do it slow and not worry about the time, it wouldn’t have turned out even good enough for me to want to post a pic.

yea thats pretty much exactly what im talking about...however i dont have much patience to try different things. I think i'll stick with the NPR with Water INjection, mounted HMIC and be back on the road in 2 days

Shoot, lets keep this one going. Rotarypower101: What intercooler and radiator did you use? Was it hard to fabricate and locate mounting points for the pieces? How about piping, and hoses for the radiator? Did you do any ducting to keep air from flowing around the intercooler and radiator? I really want some info. Thanks.

I agree, let's keep this going. I found vitually nothing trying to put mine together. Here's mine, its a kinda-H mount something..... Still working on proper pipes remaking the intake (welding the holes...)

http://www.stlrx7club.com/rx7/mini-IMG_5604.htm

Its waiting on a proper hood, as it won't truely get proper air without proper ducting with a mazdaspeed/knightsports hood. Its doing just fine though even without, to say the least. Huge difference in the end tanks when the car is ran hard. It gets both fresh air from a modified stock intercooler duct, and also air from radiator (koyo), which is still in the stock position. There is no power steering hoses, nor any A/C Condensor in the way of this, by the way, just rad and intercooler. All brackets are just basic aluminum, nothing special. Notice the front relay is moved, which is what really lets this thing mount easily.

What intercooler did you use, dimensions? Maybe one that is a little shorter would make room for a intake a la Rotary Extreme? Was it dificult to get the intercooler to mount in there? I am thinking NPR and Koyo.

BTW: Rotarypower101. That has to be the longest, skinniest air filter I have ever seen

Its an NPR Medium. I will get dimensions a bit later at home. It was easy to mount up, just making a few proper brackets. The radiator is a koyo.

I wouldn't think it would be worth making a custom one unless you were going to change the specification in some valuable way... such as maybe you want a shorter intercooler to keep a real battery in the engine bay, or other special consideration... otherwise, i'll bet you end up spending the same amount, and/or have you car innoperable for a long period of time.

I strongly disagree.

$260 NPR Med. Intercooler, Polished.
$100 6061 Alum piping I haven't installed yet.
$50 Welding piping if you can't do it.
$50 Misc couplers, etc. (you can buy in bulk, $24/ft.)
$10 Alum. Bars for brackets.

That leaves me at $470.00, if I had to pay for welding, which I don't. The cost of piping will also leave me with enough to remake my intake if I want; as I have bunch of it. Also, I haven't even used the piping yet, and it is installed solidly with the factory over the motor pipe and coupler (worked out over there nicely) and a junk steel pipe on the other side.

I could have gotten it in the car, functioning and solid, for $320.00 (intercooler, couplers, and brackets.)

The thread was asking about a V-mount setup, which to match RE's, needs an entirely different (or at least reconfigured radiator, modified and relocated A/C radiator, all new mounting brackets for both... and THEN the intercooler... sounds like you just made a new intercooler that sits horizontally. Where is it drawing air from? Does it have a duct?

So by the time you reconfigured your radiator to flow correctly with both inlet and outlet on the same end, fabbed mounting brackets, had your A/C radiator modified to be mounted the other way around, fabbed brackets for it, created shielding to seal all the openings, you'll have spent a bit more... and most folks don't have welding equipment.

Ah I see your point there. Though if you started with a stock raditor I am sure you could come in *way* under RE's pricing... Then, still you are right about the time. It is time consuming.

Is it possible to do a v-mount with the Medium NPR and a Koyo? The NPR looks like the inlet and outlet are in the right place but does the Koyo work mounted in a V setup? Are the inlet and outlet in the right place? I don't have A/C so that isn't an issue at all.
