Revisited mod from the garage
This has been covered before but thought i'd share again since I had to fab up both keyway doors on my new 93fd. What you have is plastic doors or panels that cover the door lock key set. They swing open to allow the key and swing shut to keep water and dirt out. OEM is made of plastic and over time they harden and shatter when the key is inserted during their last day on earth. These chips are usually driven on inward into the tumbler works, sometime jamming it up. The driver side key doorway has a little light which nobody really notices and the bulb burns out early.
Anyway I just made up two for my doors and it took me @ an 1-1/2 hour for both. Here is the simple steps to replacing them..
1. remove door panels
2. remove two nuts on inside of door handle
3. pull handle outwards and remove two linkages
4. remove the wiring harness attached to it where it plugs in at top of door. also two harness retainers, pop them inward
5. take the handle assembly to the table, remove the tumbler, keyway door cover, keyway door plate and look for the very small hinge spring. Keep that.
Fab up the door, polish it and re-install everything. Add a little oil to the key set works.
below is a roughed out key door with the OEM plastic one beside it. The oem is hard and ready to break.
