Resotated Midpipe Report
While I was out of town my friends shop got the resonated midpipe hooked up. I bought a never used stainless midpipe through either The Parts Trader or the used parts forum. Can't remember which, for $175. Then got a new straight through oval 16 " stainless racing muffler from Borla for $170. The shop cut the midpipe and added in the muffler. I think it was Jimlab who first mentioned this setup. Works great and the sound is even quieter (but perhaps deeper) than with the N-Tech high flow cat that was on there. It would be interesting to hearing this setup with just the muffled midpipe and a straight pipe with no other muffler ending in a nice looking exhaust tip. Next I will have them check the back pressure. It was 7 lb with the N-Tech cat a DP and a PFS cat back. To high in my opinion.

There are a bunch of mufflers. Which one did you get? I have been trying to decide.

This may sound like a crazy suggestion so if it is just slap me. I have yet to take off my main cat (just downpipe and catback right now).. how much "straight" are is there to weld in a muffler? Reason I ask is if one wanted something even more quiet would it be possible to use two of the Borla XR-1 12" oval mufflers in series? I have a feeling there isn't 24" of area to do this probably..

how about a price quote too. as soon as I get my PFC I'm planning on doing the same thing, except no muffler on the catback, only straight pipe y-ed out at the end to keep the stock look.

Don't have any pictures. It looks like a oval 16" muffler where the cat would be.
I used a Borla 16" oval Sportsman XR-1 muffler.
As to the cost to modify and install it, I haven't paid the bill yet so I can't say. It would be a fairly easy DIY. I just don't have the time right now.
The sound is very mellow. Which on a CMY 7 for the street is just what I was looking for. The color alone is enough to catch every cops eye as it is.

The midpipe is stainless so you don't need any extra stainless pipe. It's already bent to fit. Then you cut it, fit in the muffler, clamp it if you want or take it to be welded. Like I said, a fairly easy DIY. Now if you are talking about a whole exhaust system that's another story.

yeah, I'm talking about a full exaust system. muffler in the midpipe, and then straight back with some 3" piping y'ed at the end to give it a stock look. I can't do that in my garage.

capt. bill, do you have any pics of this? I am having trouble visualizing what you are talking about. Are you saying you had a muffled midpipe and you cut the muffler out and reinstalled a Borla? I think I have this right.

my SR resonated MP is nice, quiet, and throaty down low, but when you go WFO, it really wakes up the neighbors
definitely a two stage noise level....after all, that is how a resonator works, it only baffles sound at certain velocity

Here is a pic of a midpipe so you can see how much straight you have. It's not enough for 2 but plenty for one. I'm done with my resonated one and will have pics soon. It will be up for sale shortly......

I have a borla ss XR-1 regular muffler for a midpipe. It's 12 long 3 inch in, 3 inch out. (Same as Peter Farrell used to use) I then bought the 2 end flanges from racing beat and had the XR-1 fitted where the stock cat goes. I can swap it in or out with the stock if needed, with the original 4 bolts......On the dyno you make more from 4700 rpm up but less under 4700 rpm. Here is a pettit midpipe comparison vs a hi-flow cat. Remember a hi-flow cat and a stock 3rd gen cat are almost the same (about a 6 hp difference with a hp over stock).See Chart........ http://www.efini.net/hpcomparo.htm
