replacing fluids. best way to get the car up?

I know a lot of you guys do your own maintenance. And I know a lot of you guys have lowered FDs. So, what's the best way to get under the car? I was gonna put jack stands behind the front wheels to get to the tranny but it occurred to me that the car would no longer be level, which would inhibit draining/filling. Is the only solution to put the whole damn thing on stands?

Where on the tranny is the fill plug located? Front/rear, driver/pass?

Thanks.

The amount of tilt in the car when you jack up only one side is minimal... I've always jacked up & put jack stands on the frame rails just behind the front wheels. Also, I've had better luck using the stock jack as opposed to a *small* floor jack. A big floor jack is a different story.

I put the whole car up on four stands when changing oil - that way I can rotate the tires & inspect the brakes at the same time!
I use a 2.5 ton floor jack & a slotted block of wood under the center of the side rail to lift one side at a time and place the stands at the stock jacking locations.

The front jack point is so far under the car, you'll have trouble getting a floor jack under there (unless you have one of those really low profile ones, the ones that I wish I had. ). What I do..because I have an old shitty small floor jack that I bought a while ago, and realized it's inadequacy, and bought a bigger floor jack. What I do, is use the small floor jack, on the jack point behind the front wheels, lift the car enough to fit the big floor jack all the way under to the front jack point, and lift the car, then place jackstands on the side jackpoints.

The rear is a lot easier to get lifted.

The fill plug is on the drivers side, just slightly in front of where the shifter would be. You'll have to remove a dirt shield.

I use the low black plastic fibre ramps you can get from Pep Boys. They work perfect for low cars with wide tires. They are only about 5" tall, and miss hitting the front spoiler.

Thanks for the tips. How about another one? What do you guys use to get transmission/differential fluid into the fill hole? I bought this pump from Autozone where you unscrew the top, pour it in, and then push it out. Well, let's just say I made an awful mess. Maybe this thing was poor quality, cause it leaked like crazy. The brand is OEM Industrial, and they call it a Suction Gun. Might want to avoid that one.

tip....

find some bricks or wood or something....drive up on the bricks with the front wheels

then go from behind one of the front wheels and enter the jack from back there until its at a height you want.....jackstand it and then move the jack to the rear.

thats what ive always done to get under the car with my floor jack. guess it would be considered the "large" variety.

Ahh, I found a pump and my local "Shucks" (I think it's a local store). It didn't leak at all, but was really hard to clean. Get a good one from sears or something.

The pump I had, you stick a tube into the bottle of lube, and you stik the other end of the tube into the fill hole (has little arms to keep it in the hole.. Then start pumping. It worked quite well actually. Sorry I can't find any links online for it.

haha, I did the same thing. I felt like such an idiot, and gear oil stinks too.

there is a pump you can get (i got mine from kragen) that will screw onto the top of a standard quart of gear oil. makes it a hell of a lot easier

sometimes the hoses on those pumps are crimped in the packages also, and that will cause the pump to work bad. make sure you buy one that doesnt look like the hoses are crimped
