Replaced cat with borla..... now smoke!

Hello all, just got done putting some new items on the Rex. On my way home, I noticed smoke rolling out of the exhaust. I added a shine rear diffuser so I was t sure if something was touching the exhaust and burning or not.

Cruised home at very chill speed cause wanted to make sure everything was ok. Stopped at a light after about ten mins. of driving and she was smoking pretty good. Turned the car off then restarted at the light change. I was only a couple blocks from the house so I just came home.

Looks like diffuser rubbed a lil but nothing melted. Looks like exhaust is smoking. Is this normal from a semi new midpipe? I bought second hand and its been sitting in a box for about 2-3 years.

All kinds of things could be on that exhaust and now burning off of it. Idle the car and watch it from outside, look where the smoke is coming from. What smell? What color? Should be easy to tell if it is cause for concern. White is steam, black is fuel, blue grey is oil. Paint, plastics, and finishes smell different than oil. Body undercoating is another one to watch. Good luck.

Any new exhaust will burn stuff off, that's normal. If it's been sitting for a long time, it will do it even more since it's full of dust from sitting.

If it keeps up, it could be some oil from the turbos. A cat will hide a lot of oil smoke if it is burning off.

as far as color of smoke it looked to be some type of oil......blue'ish white. did not smell like oil though. i will start her up when i get home today and let her idle again and see if i can pinpoint or narrow down the options. i hope that DaleClark is right and it's just old oil residue in the mid pipe and it will eventually burn itself out.

pretty sure my turbo's aren't burning that much oil..........at least i hope not.

thanks for the input

Alright, I let the car idle with sessions of revs and holding her at 3-4 grand for short periods. Car is still producing whitish blue smoke.

Oil level looks to be on par. Am I just being too careful? The smell is a lil odd to me as it does not smell like normal oil burn to me. It smells like it is mixed with something else. I do use royal purple synth.

Should I just get on the freeway and take a long cruise and try to burn it out or should I search somewhere else for another problem? Car did not smoke at all before the used borla mid pipe was replaced.

it takes about an hour to burn off oil residue, if it hasn't been burning the oil for that long i would take it for a few drive cycles.

Alright, drove about an hour this morning and still have a lot of smoke coming from exhaust. I think I should maybe start to worry. I had no idea that the stock cat would hide that much smoke. Only other thing I can think of is that previous owner of mid pipe had huge oil leak.

Next ? Is what do I check first?

I suspect your car is fine and the the new midpipe is the culprit. The stock cat will certainly catch a lot but if you have a serious problem the car would of smoked prior to the MP swap.

Also if it's cold out the exhaust never really gets up to temp (stock exhaust with o2 pumping in will get hot and burn off gas and oil much better) and it can smoke a little all the time but would be more of a dark grey gas oil mixture and smell like gas.

I just swapped out my stock cat for a resonated MP on one of my cars and it's smoking like crazy (does have a pretty rich tune/gets about 15mpg) but usually does not smoke much if at all while driving or once it's hot.

How's the car doing btw

PS also just noticed you said borla which has the resonator so there could be tons of oil trapped in the MP from the previous owner if he had a problem.
