Rensis in a FD?

I remember posting this before in this section, but I think when the server crashed before, it got lost. Hope you don't mind me lurking through here and posting a question?!

Well, my other post a while back, after days of hearing about the new RX-8 coming out, and it being featured in the SCC, and other such mags - I had to just ask, this one simple question. Even though I drive a FC - and though, it'd be nice for it to be in one, I'd much rather ask about a FD.

How well do you think the Rensis will fit in the FD? Will it need to be modified in such a way (like a 3-rotor) that it'd be a pain to do? I have some ideas about the FC, but eh, you know.

Any opinions on this? Will you go forth the effort to do it? Do you think it'll gain any power, or put more/less weight on the car?

There have been approximately 50 posts re: this topic. It will certainly not be a drop in installation and will require a lot of fabrication. For what? Less power? No thanks.

Yes, it will be lighter and more reliable but who cares....

Actually, dropping the Renesis in a 1st gen would be really fun....

This is the *OTHER* thing we disagree on, LOL.

I see it this way, the engine block weighs about 125 lbs less. No turbos, no IC, etc. I would guess a reasonable 150 lbs difference in weight. Thats not to mention the *CHANCE* of a 6 speed tranny. The tranny may or may not have weight savings too.

Ok, with that said, my car weighs 2712 now, at under 2600, with 250 hp n/a this car will be faster than a stock RX-7, but yes You will have to rev more.

Then comes the day I put my supercharger and all you twin turbo *****'s will be eating my dust!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to apologize for doing another repost. I should have looked throughout the section before I had posted.

Can I ask, what would be the different of dropping it in a FD than a FC?

Justin - why a 3-rotor? Sure they're fast as hell..... and fun too, but why would you choose it over the RX-8's engine?

I'm just floating around ideas to see anyone elses opinion on this matter. Hope you don't mind.

oh yea and to answer your question, nobody really knows. The only thing I would guess for sure is that its not going to anywhere near the 20B installation. The 20B is a pain because it does not fit in the engine bay. this engine is smaller than the current 13B, so it has to fit. its just going to require custom mounts and other hardware. If a V-8 can fit, the renisis can too, for sure.

I *think*, at least for a while anyway, they will be much easier to aquire.
No gripes about the Renesis by any means... Theres just something about a turbo... Dunno what it is!

The 20B has something the Renesis doesn't, Torque!

I'd love to have a V8 or 20B, even if it worked out that the 1/4 mile times were the same as the current engine, the Torque would make it much more fun to drive. Unless you do a lot of highway racing.

One would think that the new renesis engine is kinda like a honda S2000 motor. No power down low, but crazy technology (side ports instead of VTEC) gives it capability up top. If you wanted to keep the fun of an FD (torque) you'd need turbos, and so the weight savings is gone with the 150+ lbs of turbo equipment.

Without turbos it may produce close to the same hp, but torque is what? 167 lb ft? Thats crap, it would feel like a honda.

As far as reliability, it should be more reliable, but will it be? that remains to be seen.

In my opinion, it's not worth it, but it would be a triumph to get the renesis in an FD with say.. BNR stage 3's hooked up to it? That'd be fun.

If it proves to be reliable, it may be as popular as Honda swaps. I would think RotaryExtreme would make a install kit (hint) with motormounts and whatnots. There shouldn't be anyproblem fitting the engine in, the problem will be squeezing in a turbo ...cause we have the need for speed (or addiction). The major problem will be cost because there won't be any used engines to ****** up. No one has gotten the grubby hands on one to find out. So it's only a matter of time before RotaryExtreme does it.

We can also see what MazdaSpeed comes up with. I beleive they are working on a turbo version. I can't confirm if it's single but I doubt we'll see twins again. Personally I think if they don't got with a BB single, I would think a Supercharger would fix the low end blues.

Renesis is a PERFECT motor for a bunch of lightweight cars. Do I want it in my FD, NO! Torque is already low with the renesis and unless it's turbo it would be like downgrading.

^ well the easy fix is a supercharger but I think we will see something more like a 2-liter 2-rotor engine for the FD or FE. Haha, the could call it "FF"

True.

Would there be a way to turbocharged or even supercharge it though? Reguardless if it is in a SA/FB, FC, FD or in it's own car, RX-8....Or would that be useless?

They make superchargers for 1st and 2nd gen Rx7's, so yes will be able to. Just depends if a company wants to invest in it.

There is no reason for the renesis to not be reliable. The NA 1st and 2nd gens have been known to go well beyond 200k miles.

Personally, I wouldn't do the swap. Having to rev up to 6k just to have to pass someone is kinda silly

throw on turbos and it'd be cool for sheezie. I wonder if you can swap the block and rotors and leave the rest of the FD goodies?
