Removing transmission bellhousing

I removed my transmission bellhousing recently and most of the bolts had silicone all over them. Is this necessary to seal the bellhousing to the transmission case? Do I need to add silicone to the bolts before I install them? The FSM doesn't mention anything about this.

^Never taken mine off, but IIRC there are maybe 8 or 10 bolts on the inside of the bellhousing that secure it to the transmission case.

Yes you will need to seal it to the transmission case, or else oil from the front bearing will leak through.

No need for silicone on the bolts themselves.

hmm that's interesting. When I pulled mine off, there was silicone on all of the bolts, but none sealing the surface to the case.

The sealing layer on the machined faces is often very thin.
