Removing Steering Column

I have my dash out and noticed the steering column has a bit of rust on it and thought it probably would be a good idea to pull, sand, and refinish it. I see only two or three bolts at the firewall and nothing else on the inside holding it. Do I have to dig down into the engine bay to unhook anything? Is there a hidden "pain in the ***" part of this job? Any problem aligning it back up?

Thanks in advance,

By the way for anyone who is searching on this you dont have to jack up the car to get the steering column out. In fact you cant' do it from underneath of the car at all. Once you have all the stuff on the inside of the car disconnected the last bolt that needs to be removed is right under the round power brake module on the firewall. You can access it from the top between the oil filter and brakes. Just turn the steering wheel until you can see the bolt and loosen with a long socket.

anyone who dosent know what the, "round power brake module on the firewall," is shouldnt be messing with an RX-7, especially if the bolt is somewhere between the brakes and the oil filter. those are, after all, a pretty long distance apart.

the bolt can however be reached from the top of the car or the bottom. these parts are common on any type of car and all generally work the same way. it is still a pain in the *** but if you think its worth it, more power to ya.

I have replaced an engine on a 3rd gen, done 2 single turbo conversions and taken just about every part of my car apart. Sure I dont know the vocabulary but that is only helpful when I am trying to communicate with people on this forum. If I need to know something I look it up.
