Which reman would you go with?
So, my 7 was having some starting problems, and long story short, I have low compression (60 psi) in my rear rotor housing.
I did not buy this car to highly mod it at all. I am perfectly happy with its stock performance. I only want reliability mods.
Anyways, I need a new engine, and my question is this...
between
*a pettit racing short block for $3500, street port, 3mm apex seal, and pettit upgraded seals, and warrantied for 1 year, 12,000 miles
or
*a mazda reman short block for $2800, warrantied for 1 year, unltd. miles
Which would you go with and why????
Will all the stuff that is done to the pettit block really be beneficial if I am planning on remaining (mostly) stock??
Money is a factor to me also, as she died at the same time my husband is doing a tt swap in his 300ZX, and the hot water heater in the house broke, and blah blah blah.
Also, what do you guys think about buying a reman from an individual with less than 20K on it ???? I know this one is kind of a gamble.
Thanks

Warming the planet.
I would talk to Pettit about doing a stock rebuild, they have a great reputation and am sure they would give you the same warranty. You certainly do not need the extra expense of the 3mm seals. But, if you have reason to belive that your exsisting rotor housings my be trashed/ worn out, then a reman would probably be a better deal but more of a gamble in my opinion. But the only way to know what your engine will need is to have it cracked open.

Get a reman from Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda. Every reman that I break apart to port has new rotor housings, and many have new rotors and iron plates. Seems like Ray gets quality remans......his # is 888 533 3400, and I believe he can beat that $2800 price.
You don't really need the 3mm seals or streetport if you plan to keep the car close to stock. But I will say that $700 more for the 3mm milling of the rotors and a full streetport and polish isn't a bad deal.

Thanks for all the quick responses. I didn't think I needed all the 3mm seals, so thanks for the confirmation.
Also, I am (hopefully) going to do it mostly at home with the help of a few wonderful locals.
The $2800 was a price quote from Ray. Actually $2500 plus $150 to ship to me, and $150 to ship mine to him.
Also, the $3500 from pettit did not include shipping price b/c I don't really know what it is...so really, it would be a lil more than $700 for all the 3mm stuff and what not.

I'm a little frustrated (if you can imagine that), and I'm searching for rotary resurection's web site, but can't find it. I know he makes posts all the time, but I'm just loosing patience for the moment looking for it. What is his web site?? Also, I suppose I could find this out once I find his web site, but does he do rebuilds? I wasn't really looking to send my engine off, but I'de love to see what he has to offer.

Rotor Sports Racing in NC, Call Bryan or Rusty... Great guys and my engine is a thing of beauty. I'm at 24k since reman and it hums beautifully. My local RX7 Mechanic said it was the best reman he'd ever seen.

I have done for years, and continue to do, FD engine builds. There's no reason why I wouldn't...they are basically the same as the earlier ones, and while the parts involved may differ slightly, they build the same way. Most REW shortblocks run between 1 and 2 thousand with warranty.
Unfortunately my website is in shambles at the moment and it is out of my hands. I wanted to wait until ALL of the new site was done and functional before going "live" with it, leaving the old (still functional and descriptive) site intact, while my web guy wanted to go live step by step with what he had...which is what happened. When it gets done, it gets done. Until then, I wish people would stop complaining about it. Anyway, anyone interested can contact me via email or pm on this forum with their concerns.
As always, all my engine builds require your core up front. Think of what I do more as a rebuilding service, more than retailing engines. It's the price you pay for the savings you get with me. I don't have any prebuilt to work on an exchange basis. This is a lot of the way I keep prices down...each owner is directly responsible for the condition of his core, and pays accordingly. This way the costs of junk cores don't get spread around to everyone. This also keeps me from having to track down cores in hopes of getting enough parts to build blocks ahead of time.

There is also www.rotaryengines.com for comparison and if still available a new block. There are other things more well spent then porting and 3mm seals although going 3mm is sometines done to be able to reuse the rotors. New water lines (especially to/from turbo), water pump, temp sensors, plug wires, vacuum hoses, injector cleaning etc that is not normally replaced would make it more reliable. I don't beleive a stock ECU will handle more fuel needed from a street port and it would be another $800 for Pettit to upgrade yours.

Ray Crowe at Malloy is awsome to deal with, and has the best prices for Mazda parts. Period.
That said, Rotary Ressurection also has an extremely good rep. here, and the prices are deffinitely fair.
