Reduced 5th gear, LSD, ring and pinion - worth it?
Reduced 5th gear, LSD, ring and pinion - worth it?
Just wondering if it is worth spending the money to get the M2 Reduced Ratio 5th Gear Set, Kaaz 4.33 R&P, and Kaaz LSD. Would these ever be practical for street purposes? I don't plan to ever take my car to a track, and I don't want to spend money on parts I won't use. Thanks,
Tyler

I think it would. I believe the gearing for these cars runs out in 5th around 188+ ish. How many times you you run even 160 on the street. Unless you are looking to get that top TIPPY TOP end then sure it would be good since we lack a 6 speed.
I would guess if you never plan on racing, i wouldnt think you would need these. But i guess if your out on the weekend and like to open her up a little bit. you might enjoy the extra kick you would get from the gears. For high HP car i would think the LSD would be good but so far i've heard of few people going with the reduced 5th gear and that the gains from them for what it sounds like you doing wouldnt be noticed.
There are several 5th gear options for the FD.... I bought the 0.806:1 which I think is even a little shorter than the one M2 sells and I love it. It makes 5th a _usable_ gear on the highway! The gear ratios I know of for 5th in an FD are:
0.719:1 stock
0.762:1 Turbo II 5th
0.806:1 RX-7 Bathurst model in Japan (the one I got)

The stock 5th sucks. It's a lame econo-gear that would redline at right around 200 mph. Are you going to go 200 ever? The one I have redlines at 180 mph, but the REAL advantage is that it helps my car stay in a good rev range on the highway. The car is MUCH nicer IMO on the highway now.

Or, you could just move up here to D-town where traffic moves at 90 (M-23 north anyone?) You will soon appreciate the stock 5th gear
BTW, this is the *only* redeeming quality of Detroit driving.
Seriously, evaluate what RPM you see during your normal commute and decide for yourself. I'd personally be disappointed with a shorter 5th.
