Ouch, no gear oil is worth paying that much shipping. Hope they help you resolve that.

I remember once letting someone send me a $10 part using my FedEx account, and the idiot at the Kinkos sent it overnight priority for $35 instead of ground for $5. But your story takes the cake.

I just changed my fluid to Neo last night.

A couple of weird things happened. Firstly, the filler plug had been sealed and was a total bastard to get loose. Then when I did get it loose, oil gushed from it. Anyway, after the entire tranny was emptied, I noticed that I had filled a 4 litre bucket with transmission fluid!!!!

Geez is all I can say - someone must have filled the trans through the other plug that is directly above the main gearbox sump plug.

Got the neo in - just on 2.5 litres as specced and went for a short drive. So far I can't notice any appreciable difference in shift quality. But maybe I need a longer run to get it all over the gears....

Still ccan't believe some idiot filled my gearbox with 4 litres!! Hopefully that hasn't wrecked it completely

Too much oil usually results in the tranny running too hot. If there is no evidence of heat damage, it's ok.

Well I'm not sure if there is any evidence of damage.

I've driven it a bit more, and it's starting to feel quite a bit better.... so maybe this Neo is good stuff lol

A quick change into 2nd from redline in 1st will meet me with a crunch even after the change... might need new synchros.....

Still no reply from Neo regarding the horrendous freight charge though...... will call them again tomorrow

I'm running Amsoil GL-4 75w-90 in the trans and Amsoil GL-5 SG 75w-90 in the diff

Amsoil is every bit as good, if not better, than Neo, despite all the claims on this forum. You definitely need to run GL-5 (extreme pressure addtive packaage) in the diff, but not the trans, since it can cause accelerated corrosion of "yellow" metals at elevated temps (> 200 F), over a long period of time

i changed to neo a year ago, right after i bought the car, both in the tranny and diff. i hadnt driven it much before i changed it and i dont know what was in it before, but i didnt notice a huge difference, but everything has been smooth.

now, however, almost exactly a year later, every shift is starting to feel very rough. it seems it happened all at once in every gear. i wouldnt think it would need changing in only a year???? about 5k miles??

im thinking about either just changing it to some fresh neo, or trying somehting else.

Sounds more like a clutch or pilot bearing problem (clutch not fully disengaging).

most trans oils tend to shear pretty quickly, so the old rule of thumb about changing the fluid every 30k miles doesn't work....something like the GL-4 rated Amsoil gear oil should resist shear longer

Neo and Redline = overrated

anyone tried Motul Gear 300?

I used to run Redline in the tranny and it was fine, then decided to try the neo, it worked good for awhile but then I started getting the fifth gear scratch when changing gears quickly (although this might have been from the miss-shift my instructor made on the track). I recently changed to Redline shockproof and now the scratch is gone, I think I had about 12k on the Neo.

we need more UAOs and less subjective opinions...everyone has their "pet" trans oil, but most people have only tried a couple of them, and only a few get the oil analyzed to see how it held up

I just switched to NEO synthetic, and it feels amazing compared to whatever was in there before. Did you put enough fluid in? 2.6 quarts?

I've tried both and found them to be equally excellent. You can add Amsoil AGX to that list also.

For the most part, any decent "big name" synthetic transmission fluid is going to be about the same as the others. Most people who rave about one or the other neglect to also mention how long the previous transmission fluid had been in their cars. In most cases, any *new* fluid would have seemed fantastic regardless of brand.

Agreed....Ive run Neo, RP, and Redline, and I never noticed a difference between them.

I switched to Neo (from Red line) about a year ago and it really helped with the notchiness and grind at low speeds especially while the tranny is cold. Interestingly, the tranny has continued to improve over time since I've switched and had the NEO in there. (It was getting worse with the Red Line.)

Just in case Speed of light doesn't see your question, let me add this...

It was either on MTL or MT90. I forget the exact one but I do remember pumping it into his tranny.
It wasn't in there more than a year so probably well under 15k miles.

Ok thanks Alberto, I'd like to see some comparisons between RL shockproof and neo, mine wasn't completely scientific but the RL seems to be better for me. btw are you going to sevenstock?

Shockproof doesn't offer any direct advantages over other gear oils, except that it contains some solids that help cushion gears in shock loading conditions. It's really designed for use in differentials and it states it's not for use in synchromesh transmissions.

But if it works for you keep using it.
