Nope, talking about cutting the seat itself. Not much mind you, just a little trim here and there. The cover comes off with removing 2 screws and releasing the tension spring at the bottom. Most I need to remove in any one place is about 1/2". Don't want the seat rubbing holes in the interior. Once the cover is pulled back tight I don't think you would ever notice where it was trimmed
So you'll remove 1/2" off the base of the seat...

I know you can sand or trim the bolster down... just thought you were talking about taking some area off the rails themselves. I am worried about the height issue as well since I'm 6'3"

Yes, a half inch off the rear feet. Also looking at the picture again it looks like the front holes on the Corbeau rail are a tad lower on the rail, think I can slot them a bit and get the bracket even lower to the floor. Will have to bolt the rails in the car by themselves to confirm.

Have you tried to sit in any seats yet? This thread is going no where...find a race shop that carries seats and try the seats out...so you have a base to start from.

I've ordered 2 Corbeau FX1 seats from soloracer.com, along with double locking sliders.

They were concerned about fitment in the RX-7, and wondered if I had done any research, so I pointed them to some posts to this thread.

Seem like good people to work with.

I'm 5'11", 230 lbs., 46" chest.

If Chadwick at 6'4" can get into the unmodified seat while just grazing his head on the headliner, I should be good with a helmet on. I plan to remove 1/2" from the legs before mounting.

One thing I forgot to check:

Chadwick: Does your car have a sunroof? I can't tell from the pics.

I worked on the seat some last week and thought I would update my results. I am now very happy with the fit. I shaved close to an inch off the rear feet and about 1/4 off the front feet. You are limited to how much you can remove from the front because of the sliders. After shaving the bolts were a bit too long but Corbeau is kind enough to include side mount bolts so I removed two bolts from the side mount to use on the bottom. They were the perfect length for the shaved feet.

I can now sit in the car with about a 2 finger clearance above my head with the cushion in. To wear a helmet I have to remove the cushion but I like the way the seat feels with the cushion removed, I feel more captured if that makes sense.

I also flattened out the rear bracket feet a little to gain a bit more head room. If you look at the stock slider the rear bolt holes are on the same plane as the lower part of the sliders. The Corbeau rails stick down about a ½ inch from the bottom of the slider. I press them a little flatter in a vise and maybe gained another ¼ inch.

I still have to remove the cover and shave the wing on the door side and put the trans tunnel cover back on to check the fit there.

I will update with pictures when I finish off the install.

Dan

I bought mine at Soloracer.com (can't beat the free shipping) also and had to go around and around with Brent to get it ordered. I know he had my best interest in mind but I had already talked with Corbeau directly and knew what I was getting into.

The guys at Corbeau were great, they know their products well and since I already owned a Clubman it was easy to compare/speculate were the problems might be in getting the FX1 to fit.

I did finish the install this weekend but didn't have the camera with me. I'll grab some shots when I'm back over at the shop.

I shaved the wing down so that it no longer touches the door and replaced the cover. Looking at it with the cover on, you really don't notice the area I removed. Now I can shut the door without it hitting the composite of the seat. The cover still touches, but that is not a problem for me. The door panel just pushes in the cover so it looks like a perfect curve around the panel.

I install the trans tunnel and the seat does not touch it. The area where it hit the carpet I left alone as the seat still has full travel. So it pushing in on the trans tunnel carpet doesn't bother me.

I did notice now that I've lowered it, it no longer touches below the door armrest, but does touch the hatch release a bit. Not enough for me to shave it though.

Over all it is a snug fit, but other then shaving off the feet and cutting a chunk out of one wing I didn't have to do much work for it to fit. If I wasn't so damn tall I could have left the feet on it and would of had to cut even less off the wing.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Yes, I had wondered about that. After considering how much you lowered your seat, it occurred to me that I may be able to live with it as is.

Time will tell, and as I said earlier, I can't really mess with it for 3 weeks (work...)

I'll second the waiting for modified pictures.
I'd also be interested in the measurement in the full aft,(back), position, straight up to the ceiling. I have a thread where I was trying to quantify aftermarket seats.
Here is that thread for info:

I'll bump it up for measurement info.

Chadwick, do you think that a FX1 pro would fit without much modification? It looks to be about an inch tighter at the waist and 1.5 inches at the shoulders according to the Corbeau website.

I had the opportunity to sit in one over the weekend and was certianly impressed. The newer fabric also seems like it'd take abuse much better. I plan on using the seat for street and track duty with the stock 3 pts so the lower side bolsters were also a big plus for me.

My biggest concern with the Corbeau seats was that you don't sit "down" in the seat very much and I worry that I won't really gain that much headroom. I guess I could always take out the cushion at the track or shave it down.

Also, does Corbeau make side mounts and sliders for our cars? It seems like that'd be the best way to gain as much headroom as possible.

O.K. I've read every page of this post and I just want to make sure I understand.

Sparco Evo3's will not fit.
Sparco Evo2 and 2+ will fit with modification to the shoulder wing and bracket.

Corbeau FX1 will fit with a little trimming of the shoulder wing.

Kirkey will fit but is aluminum and needs a rollbar to attach too.

What wasn't clarified is this:

Will the Sparco Torino's fit my *** and the car?
How about the Corbeau A4's

Am I missing anything?

I'm 5-9 230 lbs. with a 4 inch waist.

Thanks
Rich.

Here are some interesting pics of Corbeau FX1 Pro seats in Keith Tanners Targa Miata.

These clearly show how much lower the seat can be made to go.

I hope to be test fitting my FX1's this week (not the pro model), and will post some pics if I get to it.

Got to spend some time on the vmount setup. Someone else (afgmoto) is doing most of the vmount work, I'm doing the supporting (eg. messy) bits.

Thanks for the post, I was very curious as to what the "feet" on the bottom of the seat were going to be. I ended up ordering a FX1 Pro for my FD, and since it's a sunroof car I very likely may need to remove those feet in a similar manner.

Did he say how he removed them (what'd he cut the fiberglass with) and did the seat require any additional bracing after removing them or are they not really there for structural purposes?

When I had my FD I was 6' and weighed 230lbs (fat ***) with a 38" waist and I fit perfectly fine in my stock seats.

However, now I'm 170lbs, and with a 32" inch waist... I'm sure i could get in and out of it easier now

bump it up, with a question to Chadwick. You bottom mounted your seat with the Corbeau brackets correct? Yet you still shaved the feet on the bottom? I don't have my FX1-Pro yet (on order), but I was concerned as to if shaving that fiberglass on the bottom would weaken the structure of the seat when bottom mounted?

Cut about an inch off the rear feet and 1/4 inch off the front. The steel inserts are farther up in the feet so I don't think it will effect the strength.

As a side note, I got to sit in the FX1 pro this weekend and I don't fit. Way to tight in the hips/*** area.

^^ Thanks Dan, that helps me understand the makeup of the seat. I barely fit in the FX1-Pro, but it's definately better than some of the "normal" seat alternatives for the FD (Pole Position, MemoryFab, ANYTHING made by Bride). I also think that the lower bolsters of the Corbeau make for a better street/track seat. The new fabric seems like it will wear better than most cloth race seats as well.

I forgot to ask, what are you using to cut/shave the shell?
