If you didn't buy them, how do you know they were not working because of a manufacturing problem verses damage by the previous owner?

If people used that logic, everything on the FD would be "cheap" as most people end up with damaged or broken parts from the car's previous owner.

wow look at these new dual display gauges vei came out with... we should get a group together to order.. (10% discount for 10 or more of the same gauges/sensors..) http://www.veisystems.com/d1-instruments.html

for example water temp + oil temp is $89 and $30 for the 2 sensors.. $119, before group discount. these gauges have warning and playback! also available for pressure etc but their oil pressure only gets up to 100psi.

i'd probably be in for water, oil temp combo gauge.

So what would be the 3 most important gauges to get?...I'm thinking coolant temp. and fuel pressure..not sure of the third.

for a street car, coolant temp, boost and the rest are all kind of equal after that...

For a track car, coolant temp, oil temp, boost

SPA guages..

check out SPA gauges. I may be the finest gauges available. Dual meters/ function choices of bezels, backlight, warning, reset, peak settings, microprocessors. Oh and yea they are pricey! However, you get two gauges in one, I think they look good and the display is digital so you see exactly where you are without having to read the needle.

Autometer gauges are fine. MANY MANY MANY cars here, and in NASCAR, and pro drag use full setups with Autometer. They've been around.

I seriously think though, the better you build the car, the less you need to monitor stuff. Many times, by the time you notice something out of whack, it's too late.
