Rebuild: thinking of buying all the parts one by one at the dealership
Hi guys,
I spent the morning creating an Excel sheet to compare Atkins's prices with my local dealership.
Surprisingly, a lot of parts coming from Mazda are cheaper than Atkins's. I'd save buying each of the parts I need from Mazda, instead of buying an expensive rebuild kit ($1,800?) from Atkins. Plus, it's easy to get refunded if I bought something extra (and it's just down the street). And I don't need to "buy" 12 side seals if I only need 1 (that's my actual situation, maybe consider it as a question, can I do that?).
What do you guys think? Yes I know it would be much more difficult in a sense buying each of the part to the dealership, but I'd say I'm almost there (I spent 30 minutes with the parts guy to get his prices on each of the rebuild parts).

Do whatever you feel works best for your situation. The worst thing for us above the border is the exchange rate. I'd shop around though and see what other options are available. I always had good dealing with Adam at RX7 specialists and he can tell you exactly what you need for your rebuild requirements. Good luck.

atkins prices for 99% of their gaskets and seals are insanely high compared to the dealer. try mazdapartsunlimited.com. theres a lot of great pricing there. unless you can get someone in japan to hook it up for you then youre kind of stuck. i can say when i compared prices from atkins to the dealer, the total price was about half of what it would have cost through atkins. their insane mark up is questionable.

So whenever I need an OEM part I always compare multiple places for prices. I found that the prices vary from vendor to vendor. So there is no exact rule.

Amayama is a good place to check prices against US/Canadian dealerships.

Atkins has always been very good to me but I know that when I add whatever I want to my cart, I'm going to get hit with high shipping rates. One small gasket they can send in an envelope for the cost of a stamp or a little more will cost you 12 bucks to ship. My Mazda dealers suck here. There's retail price and then there is their price. Usually I can argue them down a bit. The nice thing about them is that they can have my part delivered usually in two days and while I have to pay tax, I do not have to pay shipping. Some stuff I get from Mazda, some stuff I get from Atkins, just depends on what I need and how fast. I know for a fact that if I wanted a rebuild kit for example with Apex seals, Atkins will beat the price hands down over the dealer. So like stated above, shop around.

Depending on what you need, Atkins may be the most cost-effective option. Seals and springs are one thing, but most of the gaskets are extremely expensive to purchase individually. For a twin turbo car there are a lot of misc gaskets you should be replacing and the more basic kits do not include them. If you do buy from Atkins, I recommend changing out the corner seals apex seals to oem at the time of order.

Definitely give Adam at rotary specialist at least an email. He's really good about getting back to you and you can cherry pick what internal parts you want to run sorta like Atkins. And I do believe he offers OEM parts reasonably priced. I have yet to install his race apex seals i purchased a couple months back, which he claims are better/stronger than stock seals. Maybe others can chime in about how well they hold up..

Lots of good info in this thread for us Canadians needing rebuild parts.
I agree with giving Adam a call/email. I got my last rebuild kit from him. We talked over email and put together a kit to my specifications. The kit came out about $70-$80 cheaper than the same Atkins kit and shipping was cheaper since I didn't have to pay huge US shipping fees.

in reality it means you get to order a long list of parts and put them in one bag yourself.
