rebuild price too high or what??

i am 30 minutes away from roatry power in gardena and i am going to buy an engine from ray at malloy which will cost $2400 with gasket set and shipping both ways to cali. i called jeff and he said it will take about a week to do what i want (3mmseals and a streetport that passes smog). the thing that surprised me was the price. he said $450 streetport, $450 3mm seals, $900misc seals and labor. the total price came out to $1800 for a streetport and 3mm apex seals.

is this too high???

btw, this is going to be a single turbo engine, i told him that!

You do realize that he has to completely disassemble the engine to do those modifications, right? He's essentially charging you $900 to tear apart your motor and put it back together, including parts. $450 for a streetport is pretty typical, $450 for milling the rotors to accept 3mm seals is pretty typical (actually on the lower side for Cali engine guys).

Sounds about right. You are paying $4200 for a motor with, hopefully, new rotor housings, and streetported with 3mm seals. Sounds fairly typical. All the prices you see for people getting <$3000 rebuilds aren't including new rotor housings, that's for sure.

Jeff charges $3100 for his own rebuilt with a mild streetport with 3mm apex seals. If new rotor housings are needed then $650 x 2. $1400 installation charge.

why are you getting 3mm seals ?????
stick with 2mm!!!!!

3mm are fine if your rotor is fucked up but why bother if you have good 2mm rotors. that makes absolutely no sense

waste of time money and effort

I would stick with the stock seals unless your rotors are fubar or you plan on running a lot of boost.

i know he is a very honest builder but i wanted to know how his engines last???

as for the 3-2mm seal argument, i want to run more boost safely!

and yes, i know i can run more boost not "he thinks he can".

thanks for all the help!!!

my FD has seen 20psi on pump gas. stock seals its more about tuning than 3mm vs 2mm.... 3mm is a bandaid but to each his own

You should do more research or ask more people that have had rebuilds there.

Buying a new rebuilt engine to have it rebuilt again seems pretty silly. You could use that wasted money to rebuild your own block with new parts. Don't think you are getting all new parts on the reman cause your not.

Jeff Has(Had) a Montego Blue Rx-7 (Lic: Hey Lets)in is parking lot and it had 2XX,000 mi on it as I recall, and he (Jeff) said that this guy has 120K on his rebuild and it's still getting good compression, and the water seals are still holding tight.... so maybe that guy can chime in here...

Whoa! If that is true, then I really hope my rebuild from RP will get half of that, hehe.

As for the 3mm apex seals, it seems that every motor that comes out of RP is outfitted with 3mm apex seals -- I suppose Jeff swears by em.::shrugs::

Mild to Medium, with stock ECU 70-80% chance you'll pass (nothing is 100% since people fail stock) so chances with a mild a good, chances with a medium are chancey, yet still good,...

Now if you get PowerFc / AEM Haltech etc... Put on a rev limiter of 4K and tune way lean... drive carefully to smog place and test... with that you should be able to pass with single turbo and race port... if it's tuned lean... it'a all about the PPM (Parts Per Million) less fuel, + good cat = les PPM
