Have a 93 with stock exhaust and about 11,300 miles on the car. Always been very quite and want to upgrade the exhaust but can't afford spending $500 for a catback. What about a SS muffler? Some made by Ractive look good but was wondering if they help, hurt or don't do anything but sound louder? Any one tried these mufflers?

 

wow. 11,300 is low mileage for someone without the means to spend some cash on an exhaust. Prolly, should stick with what you have and eat some more crawfish eatufe(sp?).

Never heard of the others you mention so they are probably in the less than stock quality category.

IMO, don't go cheap. Wait until you can afford something good and something you know you'll be happy with.

Sometimes, going cheap ends up just being a waste of money.

Your best bet is going to be to save $300.00 for a catback. The NurSpec that Mahjik posted is nice and I personally think the HKS Hiper is a great priced exhaust at $320.00 but don't know how "free flowing" it is.

I wouldn't buy a universal muffler unless you're going to do it the right way, buy one with a 3" inlet, and have a catback made by your local exhaust shop. But by doing this you'd probably spend $200.00 anyways with something that you'd have no idea how it would sound after it's done. Just hooking a universal muffler to your stock exhaust piping isn't going to give you the results a full cat-back will.

If nothing else check the forsale sections/ebay/www.thepartstrader.com for used cat-backs for sale and hope to score something cheap.

Another option if you want more horsepower and a little louder exhaust note is to get a downpipe. You can get them starting at $200.00 on up, it's one of the best performance/reliability mods for your car.

 

I picked up a used RB catback for $350 with low miles. It's just a little louder, but not too loud. Don't go cheap, you have the wrong car for that.

 

i have a straight pipe and a stainless tip.....very very cheap!!! less than $200 installed but I could have used clamps and done it for under $100. With the stock cat and pre cat the note is deep and rumbly. recently replace precat with pettit down pipe..now she's a bit too loud for my tastes. Go racing beat all the way....best sounding "imo", best fit, longest lasting, easy easy to install and more hp to boot. we are working towards a group buy for an april purchase target as part of the rx7revolution event. pm me if you want in....the more people that want in the better the price!! $350 is a killer price--wish it was mine lol. Stay away from glass packs and autozone cheapo's, they will melt. Im not sure ractive will take the temps either---seen people try super trap with mild success but they dont last long. bon chance mon ami

 

i agree save up your money and buy an exhaust that you will be satisfied with........dont waste your money

i have the HKS Hiper Racing exhaust kit....full 4'.......dp/mp/cb......sounds real deep and nice and not raspy at higher rpm's.........the price would send you back a bit ($1500) but get something that you wont have to change again

plus its always nice to roll up to a ricer, rev it up, blow a nice flame, and just smile.......no better feeling

 

honestly, IF I had an FD with only 11k miles on it, I would elave it bone stock and garage it. I'd feal bad modding an FD with such low miles.
