I had a leaky rear main and also happened to have my oil pressure sender go bad around the same time, so both got replaced, although I don't think they were related. I wouldn't worry about the cost of the seal itself, because the labor to fix it is way more.

fart on a friends head!!!
i found some greasey film in the bellhousing of my transmission. i would assume this means that my rear main seal is chopped up. am i correct in assuming this? i also have my lightened flywheel to install so i figured i could install that at the same time. you should have to remove the flywheel to get to it, right? i have oil all over the underside of my engine and on the skidplate. i figured the rear main might be the culprit. what do you guys think?

Thats what happened when mine went, oil all over the bottom. Once the tranny is off its easy to tell if it needs replacing anyway, and the added labor is very small, it'll probably add $100 on top of the cost of the clutch/flywheel including the seal, tops.

It is probably wise to replace the rear main seal whenever the flywheel is off. The part is cheap ($7-$35 apparently, I thought I paid about $20 for one) and the labor is pretty minimal (15 minutes?) if the flywheel has already been removed.

Then why the hell does the dealer want to charge me $628 in labor alone and $45 for the damn seal? The mechanics manual is $150, I figure I oughta just get that and do the work my self since I can get some time on a lift for $20. Now I just gotta see if I can get the seal for less than $45. If not... o well I guess the dealer gets my cash.

Well, they are charging you a good mark-up on the rear seal, that's for sure. And I was mistaken, it's about $20, not $7 (mixed that up with another seal). The labor sounds a little steep but they DO have to pull your transmission, clutch, and flywheel off.
BTW, you can get the factory manual for less than $150. Check out www.mazdaformance.com While you're there ordering your manual ($85 for small print, $125 for large), order the rear seal from them.

The dealer charged you $628 for the labor because you have to take off the tranny and clutch and flywheel inorder to get to the rear main seal. Usually there isnt much of a difference between a good aftermarket seal and an oe one. But sometimes you do get some funky cheapy aftermarket ones.

Okay, i'm smoking crack, the oem rear main seal is only like $6. the seal, is not as easy to install as you might think, but its not hard. Sometimes the seal gets stuck in there pretty good, and you dont want to just pop out the old you. You have to be careful not to mar the shaft. And when you install it you have to make sure the spring inside the lip doesnt pop out and that the seal is installed evenly. If not it will leak, i've seens this a few times. It helps if you have something the same diameter of the seal and something deep enough so you can install the seal evenly.
