Question Rear Hatch Rattle

Does anyone know how to stop this? I read a how-to about it, but I think it would be easier if I had pics...or at least get more specific information.

remove the plastic loosen the screws and lower the lock. It will just keep rattling if the weather stripping is old. You could buy my weather stripping and solve the problem just 40.00 shipped for the rear weather stripping in great shape

This was a known problem and requires you to replace the hinges at the top. I did after trying all the weatherstripping approaches, the rattle was at the top.

i know this isn't the way everyone talks about, but it worked for me and it's an easy fix. i took some grease and put it all around the top hinge (put a ton on). once i closed the hatch, the rattling stopped.

I looked at the two hinges at the top. (The 2 on either side that enable the hatch to move up and down.) The How-to said to remove the "plastic", but I don't see plastic anywhere near the hinges. Could they be talking about the rubber weather strip that blocks them? ...Because thats what I had to remove to get to them. Either way, it said I had to loosen the two screws and push the hinge "down" then tighten. There are four screws that hold it in place. Two connected to the hatch and two on the car itself, so which do I loosen then tighten? and how do I push it "down"? Pics would help. Thanks

One other thing, do your hatches stay up by themselves? or do they fall back down once you let them go?

i thought they were referring to the latch nearer to the keyhole....move it down and it pulls the hatch shut tighter

i'm not sure if this is the sound you're talking about but before you try all this stuff, just wrap electrical tape around the the latch on the hatch. worked for me.

Ok, these ideas sound good. I have a better idea of where to look now.

How about my other question about the hatch staying up?

uh, the hatch should stay up
you probably need new hydraulics. i don't think the ones on there can be adjusted. not an expert though!

Yeah, I thought so...thanks. It's not too vital, but I'll have to look for some new ones.

Mine won't stay up either.
Had inquired at the dealer how much it would be and basically decided that other things took priority. Can't recall the cost though.

My hatch started squeak/rattleing when the frame would twist going over bumps. THICK gooey black as sin axel grease to the rescue. I put it on the latch hook. Works for the hood latch as well

I tryed this idea and the one from spurvo. I highly recommend that before adjusting the latch (above the outside keyhole) or replace hinges that you do the simple things first. I simply lubed the hinges and greased the rubber bushings/stops along the water channels. My noise has been eliminated and i would suggest trying this before you mess around with the hatch hinges.

Doing the simple things first sounds like a better idea than loosening and tightening hinges. Thanks for the specific location too 2-rotor, I'll get some grease and lube it later. What kind did you use/suggest?

Ive driven in other 7's but never heard a rattle. Mine makes a sound like there is a small screw in a small plastic box or sumthn. Really doesnt sound like a hatch rattling... unless thats what Im hearing.. either way, Ill grease em. Can I just use regular White Lithium grease?

Mine has the squeeky chirping sound too when its around 40-60. It was really driving me nuts because it sounded like squeeky springs bouncing around like back in the good ol' days of riding the bus to grade school. I've gotten to the point where I ignore it all the time now, but it makes the car seem crappy when you hear all this racket. I'll try the grease stuff soon. I don't see why that shouldn't work.

MakoDHardie - try the "grease thing". I used WD-40 or something similar and it has reduced/eliminated the squeak noise for a few months at a time. Then I just regrease when i notice it again.

instead of lowering the latch and screwing up the alignment between the hatch and rear fenders, I added some spacers to the bottom of the rubber stoppers on the sides of the hatch area. it works pretty well.

^Spacers? What kind of spacers did you use and where did you get them? I have to lift one side only and that would work for me.

kmaot- thanks, I'll try the WD-40 when I get around to it later today. Those sounds were driving me nuts.
