Rear end noise (clunk)

New to the site need a little help. I have a 93 RX-7 R1 with 13,000 original miles on it. I have the clunking noise in the rear suspension. Is it possible with that few miles on the car that the 6-pillow ball bushings need to be replaced? Everything else I checked seems to be fine.

I don't think that's your problem...Sounds like my problem...Does the car make the sound only when accelerating or decelerating? If so it could be the diff mounts...The car is 13 years old so the rubber is breaking down...

No the car only does it when going over bumps or roughroads... Thats why I thought it was the pillow ball bushings;

Could be the rear hatch lock. Shake the hatch up and down to see if it makes noise. I don't care how old the car is, with that few miles. it is extremely unlikely that any bushings would be bad enough to make a clunk.

No its not the hatch it is defenitly coming from the rear suspension.

Try shooting the suspension with a water hose for about 5 minutes and see if the noise disappears. When I bought my car, it had the aftermarket urethane bushings which made it intolerable to drive without earplugs. Water cured it for short periods of time but new stockers have cured it almost forever

Also, check the stock jack and components. They can rattle around back there and make it sound like suspension parts.

I had the same problem untill I found out that theres this metal box ( I think it's for rear washer pump) located behind the boot trim not mounted properly. In fact it's not even mounted so it makes this annoying noises everytime i go tru bumps/ unlevel roads since it rubs against the floor pan.

Also I reckon check what other's have said, bushings, pillowball, suspension (shock abosorbers - I got a TEIN on my car and it makes this clunk clunk noise coz apparently the gas inside the shock is finished/empty).

The pillow ***** are metal heim joints that are located in the rear control arms. Ray at Malloy sells all 6 ***** with 12 dust boots for $390 shipped, his # is 888 533 3400.

I orderd the 6-pillow ball bushings from my local Mazda dealership this week. I have checked everything out and Iam 90% sure even with only 13K on the car it this is the problem. The noise (clunk) happens going over rough roads almost like something is bottoming out... My struts are new Tockio's with eibach springs. The "clunk" is defenitly not something loose (jack/hatch/ whatever.) It is defenitly coming from the rear suspension. I will let you know if this solves the problem after I put in the new pillow ball bushings..

Who installed your suspension? and are there any other mods done to it? Perhaps you are hitting your bump stops over rougher terrain.

The only thing done is tockio struts with eibach springs.

Try parking your car with the ebrake and get under your car in the rear. Grab a hold of something that would be easy for you to rock the car back and forth or have someone rock the car back and forth for you. While your doing this pay close attention the the trailing arms that connect to the rear lower arm you will probably see it moving or grab a hold of the parts that you think that have play you can get a better feel on what needs to be replaced.

Here is a pic of where mine had play. (Green arrow)

I ordered a set of 6 pillow ***** and 12 seals from Malloy Mazda and I talked to Ray he said it should cure the clucnking noise. I only have 60K on Chassis.
